Death Threats, Absentee Manager And First Base Drama What’s Going On In Boston?
There comes a time in every franchise’s history where the drama just seems to be non-stop. No matter how a team plans for the present and the future it can never eliminate all potential problems. And right now, one of the most storied franchises seems to be going through it. Death threats, an absentee manager and first base drama make us wonder what’s going on in Boston? The Red Sox are mired in drama at the moment.
The first and worst issue is the death threats received by reliever Liam Hendriks and his wife. Hendriks had Tommy John surgery in August of 2023. He returned to the mound on April 20 of this year. However, he has been struggling in his comeback thus far. Pitching to a 5.56 ERA with 11 strikeouts and six walks in 11 ⅓ innings for the Red Sox. But that doesn’t warrant receiving death threats and Hendriks spoke out about it on his Instagram post:
“Just as an FYI:
“Threats against me and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help. Leaving comments and telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should step back and reevaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen and attacking players and their families. Whether you do it from your ‘fake accounts’ or are dumb enough to do it from your real account. “I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their career when I say:
“Enough is enough.”
And then there are the fans who are disgruntled with manager Alex Cora. On Monday, Cora missed the game to attend his daughter’s graduation from Boston College. Bench coach Ramón Vazquez filled in for Cora and they won the game against the Mets 3-1. Cora came back on Tuesday but got ejected from the game in the third inning. He had an intense argument with the umpire over Walker Buehler’s early removal.

Vazquez stepped in again and the Red Sox went on to win that game as well, 2-0. So could there be a manager controversy brewing? There really shouldn’t be as Cora is clearly demonstrating the importance of work-life balance. “This is my job, but it’s not my life,” he stated. “For those that don’t understand, I’m not going to try and convince them.” The front office gave him the full day off so why should anyone else complain?
Finally, the Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels announced a trade yesterday. The trade is meant to help the Red Sox deal with their first base issue. Triston Casas season ended with a left patellar tendon injury. Therefore, Boston asked third baseman Rafael Devers to move to first base but he declined. So on Thursday they acquired first baseman Ryan Noda from the Angels. Noda provides organizational depth at a position of need for Boston.
So despite all the talk going around, no doubt the Red Sox will weather this storm as they continue to navigate the season.
