They thought they had their guy and really liked what they saw in him. However, the Lakers potential head coach candidate has decided to make a different call. Dan Hurley has turned down the Lakers’ Six-Year $70 million offer to stay with UConn.

Nonetheless, Hurley is staying put for good reason. Dan has a chance to accomplish another great historic feat and goal with Connecticut. Dan loves what he’s built with the two-time defending national champions and is aiming for a third championship.

Therefore, Hurley is sticking with the Huskies and choosing to tack on to his already impressive college hoops legacy. Dan carefully weighed both choices. But ultimately picked UConn despite the Lakers making a compelling case and presenting a compelling vision.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is among the first to break the news of Hurley’s ultimate decision to Los Angeles fans and the NBA masses. He states,

“BREAKING: Connecticut’s Dan Hurley has turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ six-year, $70 million offer and will return to chase a third straight national title, sources tell ESPN. LA would’ve made him one of NBA’s six highest paid coaches.

As swept away as Hurley became by the Lakers courtship and vision for him, he ultimately couldn’t walk away from a chance to make history and pursue a third straight NCAA title. Even before Lakers talks, Hurley already had a UConn offer to become one of highest paid NCAA coaches and those talks will continue, per sources.”

So then, quite the disappointment for the purple and gold. However, time is of the essence. The iconic franchise must fill this essential and important role. Therefore, now that Dan Hurley is out the picture, what’s next? What is the plan?Wojnarowski continues,

“After a dogged pursuit of Hurley over past weeks, Lakers will regroup and resume bringing in candidates for interviews with hope of hiring a coach by Draft, sources said. James Borrego is expected to remain part of group and Lakers could do their first formal interview with JJ Redick.”

Tick Tock. It may be June, but the Lakers want to make a good decision. Head coach turnover has been extremely high over the years and what they are after is for more stability. Since changing coaches every 12 to 24-36 months is not a recipe for continued success.
