Dan Campbell Announced Sam LaPorta Underwent Back Procedure And Unlikely to Return This Season

It was a scene that no Detroit Lions fan wanted to see. Their 24-year-old TE departing from an important matchup. LaPorta, currently ranks second on the team with 40 receptions this season and is a key part of what’s been a 12 personnel-heavy offense. However, he is now a big contributor and offensive key that will be missing action on the field moving forward. Dan Campbell announced that TE Sam LaPorta underwent a back procedure and is now unlikely to return this season.

LaPorta suffered a back injury during the Week 11 game against Washington, which led to him being placed on injured reserve. While the team was initially hopeful for a return, further medical testing revealed that it is unlikely he will play again in 2025.

In a presser on Friday morning head coach, Dan Campbell provided an update on team matters including any news on Tight-End Sam LaPorta. Specifically regarding LaPorta, Campbell explains,

“So yeah look Sam did have a procedure. He’s going to be out for a while, FOR A WHILE… I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the REST OF THE SEASON. Yeah at some point I think that is very slim. Very slim. The good news is that the procedure went really well… long term.”

So then, this is very tough news for the Lions offense. It is absolutely wonderful to know that the procedure went well, but the Detroit tight end will miss significant time on the field. And the Lions relied heavily on his talents as well as abilities a lot. Therefore, Detroit will now have to push forward without one of their biggest difference-makers.

Lions are in an all out battle and race to the finish in the NFC. Only two teams have eight wins, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams. At the time of this posting the Lions sit with a record of 6-4. Good enough for third in their division, the NFC North. Just behind the Chicago Bears (7-3) and the Green Bay Packers (6-3).

The Lions will need to quickly pivot. The loss of LaPorta will not make it easy. But if they can weather the storm they can keep their playoff ambitions alive.
