Dallas Mavericks Expected To Lose Millions After Luka Doncic Trade
It was the trade that left the NBA universe stunned. In midseason the Dallas Mavericks traded their darling superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers for the Lakers’ Anthony Davis. And this happened after leading the Mavs to the NBA Finals. Dallas fans were sick, shocked and in utter disbelief over the trade. And now the Dallas Mavericks are expected to lose millions of dollars in revenue after that earth-shaking Luka Doncic trade. No one could understand why the franchise would make that trade and now the team is literally going to have to pay for it.
Even the most famous former Maverick, Dirk Nowitzki, was stunned by the trade. He was on a family vacation when he heard the news. He had to skip lunch as he sat in his hotel room for an hour “trying to figure out it was real. I will always be a Mavs fan, but this trade really hurt,” Nowitzki said, according to a translation by the European website basketnews.com. “And it will take a while before everyone processes it and moves on.” Luka was set to be a legendary athlete in Dallas just like Notwitzki.
So after shocking their fan base and their own living legend the Mavericks are going to end up losing money. According to NBACentral quoting ESPN NBA reporter Tim McMahon:
“The Dallas Mavericks are projected to lose dozens of millions in revenue this year and over nine figures over the next several years after trading Luka Dončić , per @espn_macmahon
“It’s a decision, team sources told ESPN, that probably will cost the franchise nine figures over the next several years, as the Mavs are projected to lose dozens of millions in revenue this season due to dwindling crowds, plummeting merchandise sales and sponsors severing ties with the franchise in the wake of the trade. So many fans canceled season tickets in the days after the trade that the Mavs attempted to generate some goodwill by offering limited refunds.”

The fans are making their displeasure known, loud and clear, hitting the Mavericks where it hurts the most. And as for Doncic, he is still trying to adjust to the change two months later. He said,
“Dallas was my home for seven years, almost seven years,” Doncic said more than six weeks after the trade. “It really felt like home.”
“I know it’s been two months or something, but still adapting a little bit,” Doncic, who is averaging 27.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists for the Lakers, said recently. “It was a big change. But it’s getting better.”
The monumental trade has been rough for everyone. And only time will tell if trading a generational talent will pay off for Dallas. But for now they’re going to have a tough time making the financial bleeding stop.
