It started with a blockbuster trade that stunned the entire basketball world. Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. From there, fan outrage, a disappointing season, Kyrie as well as AD injuries and a sharp dip in revenue (stemming from TV revenue loss, Doncic trade impact and lower merchandise sales); only added to the pain. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Mavs’ GM would find himself in the hot seat. To start righting the ship, the Dallas Mavericks and owner Patrick Dumont chose to fire general manager Nico Harrison.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the Dallas situation and their decision to make a move when it came to general management. Charania reveals,

“BREAKING: The Dallas Mavericks and owner Patrick Dumont are expected to fire general manager Nico Harrison at a 10 am central time meeting on Tuesday, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon.

The Mavericks are firing Harrison nine months after the jarring and stunning Luka Doncic trade – a move for which Dumont took accountability and accepted as a mistake in a court-side interaction with a fan on Monday night.

The Mavericks and Patrick Dumont have 10:30 am central time meetings to appoint executives Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi to lead basketball operations in interim, sources tell me and Tim MacMahon.”

Well, the prophecy came true and Nico Harrison was indeed fired. Mavericks’ owner/governor, Patrick Dumont then released a statement for the Dallas fan base. The letter reads:

“Dear Mavs Family,

On May 30, 2024, the Mavericks won the Western Conference championship. We came up short in the NBA Finals, but we all agreed our future was bright. As fans of this franchise, you have every right to demand a commitment to success from us.

No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season. You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act. I’ve made the decision to part ways with General Manager Nico Harrison.

Though the majority of the 2025-26 season remains to be played, and I know our players are deeply committed to a winning culture, this decision was critical to moving our franchise forward in a positive direction.

I understand the profound impact these difficult last several months have had. Please know that I’m fully committed to the success of the Mavericks.

Thank you for your support, thank you for holding us accountable, and thank you for your passion and for your patience. You deserve transparency and a team that reflects your spirit. Our goal is to return winning basketball to Dallas and win championships.

Our family is committed to that mission and to continuing to invest in Dallas and the Mavericks’ future.

Please join me in continuing to cheer on our players and supporting all of those who work to make this organization the best it can be.

Go Mavs!

Thank you,

Patrick”

While the pain of losing Luka Doncic is still taking time for Dallas fans to heal from; the future is not lost. The Mavs 3-8 record doesn’t tell the full story. Outside of games against the Spurs and Pistons this season; Dallas has not lost a game by more than 2-10 points. They’re not being blown out, in fact games have been closely contested.

Thanks to a great 2025 drafting of basketball sensation, Cooper Flagg; plus the high energy court presence of PJ Washington, Max Christie, Dlo and AD. The young core and veterans seem to mix well. So the Mavericks are close to making waves. A few more adjustments and they will be a team hard to ignore. So hang in there Mavs fans, the tunnel has revealed light.
