Dallas Cowboys’ Zack Martin Is Expected To Retire
He’s left an indelible impression upon the league as the starting right guard for the famous franchise. However, all signs point to the end of an era as the Dallas Cowboy’s Zack Martin is expected to retire. He had told the Cowboys that he would give them his decision before the start of free agency. So his decision is likely to be announced in the coming days. Thus will conclude an incredible 11-year run at the position. According to the team’s website, an official event is set to be held by the Cowboys at some point in the next two weeks to honor the living legend.
Last year, in an interview with the Dallas Star, Martin had spoken about what the future held. Martin told Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News that he’s considered retiring in 2025.
“I’m not saying 100%, but I think it’s definitely in the realm of possibilities,” Martin said. “And that’s one thing I don’t want to do. For myself, I don’t want to be thinking, ‘Oh, this is it. This is it.’ I want to stay in the moment, and I want to play the best that I can play at this point and be the best right guard this team needs on a weekly basis. And then after the season, we’ll figure out what’s going on.”
Martin was the 16th-overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys. In no time at all Martin had established himself as a force to be reckoned with as their right guard. He was selected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team that same year. It was the first of nine All-Pro selections that he would receive during his illustrious career along with nine Pro Bowl honors.
Dallas Cowboys’ Zack Martin Is Expected To Retire
Throughout his career Martin set a very high standard for himself. Despite being named All-Pro for the seventh time in 2023, he didn’t feel like he played up to his personal level of excellence.
“I don’t think I played honestly up to my standard last year, really,” Martin said. “That’s another reason why I want to finish this year strong is I think I can play at a high level still. I think I may have come up a little bit short last year. I’ve got a little chip on my shoulder to get back to that consistent, kind of dominant player that I’ve been.”
Well with standards like that, it’s no wonder that he is considered to be a future first ballot hall-of-famer. However, in 2024 he went down with a season-ending ankle injury that required surgery to repair. It was then that Martin revealed it to be a degenerative condition. He had been managing it for years to remain available for the Cowboys yet still performed at an elite level.
Now the Cowboys will face the daunting task of filling his position.
