Dallas Cowboys Trade For Backup Quarterback Joe Milton III

After Dak Prescott went down with an injury last season the team had to depend on their backup quarterbacks. However, they have lost Cooper Rush who did the lion’s share of playing quarterback when Prescott went down. Rush has signed withe the Baltimore Ravens for a guaranteed $4.2 million two-year deal. Their other backup quarterback Trey Lance remains a free agent. Therefore, there was a need for the Dallas Cowboys to trade for backup quarterback Joe Milton III from the New England Patriots.

According to ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss, “Patriots trade QB Joe Milton III and seventh-round pick (No. 217) to Cowboys for fifth-round pick (No. 171).” Milton was a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for the Patriots and he showed some potential in the last game of the 2024 season. In fact, he played so well that the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills. Granted the Bills were resting their starters; however, the victory cost the Patriots the first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Winning the game dropped them down to the fourth pick in the upcoming draft.

But the trade has left Reiss wondering about the Patriots quarterback room. He stated his opinion: “Trade of Joe Milton III for modest draft-pick return sparks a thought that it was driven as much by QB-room dynamics as anything else. It clears the runway for Drake Maye. Maye and veteran Joshua Dobbs the lone QBs now in the room.”

So was there trouble between Maye and Milton? We don’t know at this point but apparently the Patriots are fine with moving forward with Dobbs as their backup for now. Perhaps they will add another quarterback via the draft. We have less than a month to find out with the draft happening April 24-26, 2025.

Apparently the Cowboys weren’t having much luck with their backup situation either. ESPN NFL reporter Todd Archer explains: “Last season, the Cowboys had conversations with Trey Lance regarding an extension after Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury, but those did not go anywhere. Lance started the final game of the 2024 season and currently remains unsigned.”

With the signing of Milton, the Cowboys have him and backup Will Grier on their roster. And if Milton is looking for an opportunity to be the starter, he may just get it with the Cowboys. Prescott has a history of getting injured and last season he started just eight games. He is recovering from surgery to repair a torn hamstring suffered against the Atlanta Falcons. Four of the past five seasons, Prescott has missed games due to injury. If that pattern continues, Milton has a good chance of playing. If nothing else, he’ll have the chance to light up the preseason games.
