Dallas Cowboys Signed Left Guard Tyler Smith To New Blockbuster Extension
Well another deal has been worked out between a player and the team down in big D. We’re already aware of cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Tyler Ferguson recently signing deals. And of course last September quarterback Dak Prescott got a massive deal. And the month before that wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb got paid. So I guess it makes sense that the Dallas Cowboys signed left guard Tyler Smith to a new blockbuster extension. Gotta protect their quarterback, right?
Of course they do and they’re doing it in a big way. According to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith agreed to a four-year extension worth $96 million that includes $81.2 million in guaranteed money. The deal makes Tyler Smith the highest-paid guard in NFL history. Thereby rudely knocking Trey Smith from the top spot. Trey had just signed his own $94 million extension back on July 15 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Every quarterback loves a talented and dependable offensive lineman and that’s exactly what Tyler Smith has been. As noted on the team’s website, “Smith entered the league as the Cowboys’ first-round pick, 24th-overall, out of Tulsa in 2022, and though the selection was met with much chagrin from outside of the building, he has quickly entered the conversation as one of the best guards in all of football.”
And did we mention his versatility? The man is talented enough to play multiple positions on the offensive line. As he proved in his rookie season. He played offensive tackle due to injury at the position, and he excelled there while en route to being named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. However due to his eliteness at guard, the Cowboys have routinely refused to flex him back outside over the past two seasons.

Many people didn’t understand the Cowboys selecting Smith and very much disagreed with it. However, it was a good decision because former Cowboy greats Tyron Smith and Zack Martin both recently retired. But Smith has proven himself to be a trustworthy lineman. In fact he only allowed 10 pressures (3.5% pressure rate), continuing his dominance. That percentage was good enough for second-lowest among left guards over the past seven seasons.
No wonder the Cowboys picked up the $21.27 million fifth-year option on the two-time Pro Bowler’s contract. He is now signed through 2030. Doing that allowed the team to escape that hefty cap hit and instead set themselves up for cap savings over the next couple seasons — approximately $1.2 million and $16.1 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
