Dallas Cowboys Made Splash Trading For WR George Pickens From Steelers
Owner Jerry Jones had dropped hints that something big was coming up. After not making any significant moves last offseason the Cowboys have grabbed the headlines in a big way. The Dallas Cowboys made a splash this morning by trading for WR George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers. They posted the announcement on their twitter page:
“We’ve agreed to terms to acquire WR George Pickens and a 2027 6th-round pick from the Steelers in exchange for a 2026 3rd-round pick and a 2027 5th-round pick.”
With this trade deal, the Cowboys have upgraded their receiving options. Pairing Pickens with the talented CeeDee Lamb will make the duo a dangerous receiving combo. Pickens is an instant improvement to the Cowboys’ offense and another weapon for quarterback Dak Prescott to utilize.
Pickens was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He immediately became a productive part of their offense, leading the team in receiving yards in 2023 and 2024. He had his best season in 2023 with 1,140 receiving yards on 63 receptions to go with five touchdowns. And he did that working with three different starting quarterbacks: Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky.
Right now Pickens is entering the final year of his rookie contract, due just $3.65 million. So the 2025 season will be very important for him to prove that he’s worth a big-money contract. But why wouldn’t the Steelers have wanted to lock down an effective pass-catcher like Pickens? Well there have been rumors that Pickens could be a problem if he wasn’t getting the ball enough. However, Sports Illustrated noted:
‘The guys in Pittsburgh, for what it’s worth, did believe Pickens’s heart was in the right place the last couple of years, even when his frustration with the direction of the offense, or more specifically his role in it, led to emotional outbursts or uncharacteristic drops.’

However, new head coach Brian Schottenheimer is known as a culture-builder. So the hope is that Pickens will be able to thrive within Dallas’ culture. Only time will tell when the new season gets underway.
In the meantime, we wonder what is going on in Pittsburgh. They have now parted ways with their top wide receiver of 2024, along with their leading rusher Najee Harris who went to the Los Angeles Chargers. They also allowed their top passer Russell Wilson to leave and he signed with the New York Giants. Pittsburgh did acquire wide receivers DK Metcalf and Robert Woods. But will that be enough to keep their offense effective?
Currently they are also waiting on a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers as to whether he will join the team. Although they selected Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in last month’s draft, their quarterback situation is far from settled. In the end, questions remain for both Pickens in Dallas and the Steelers going forward.
