Dallas Cowboys Have Parted Ways With Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus

After living through Black Monday for NFL head coaches yesterday we can turn our attention to assistant coaches. Today it was announced that the Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with their defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. After one year with the team in that position, he has been fired. The decision had been under consideration for weeks but after the loss to the New York Giants in Week 18, his fate was sealed.

His termination is in line with the fact that the Cowboys experienced their worst defensive year ever in the history of the franchise. The Cowboys missed the playoffs again and it was, in large part, due to the defense or lack thereof. It allowed more than 500 points in a season for the first time, another franchise first. But to his credit, Eberflus did own up to the defensive problems, stating:

“I mean, I’m the defensive coordinator,” Eberflus said entering the Week 18 finale against the New York Giants. ” … The accountability is with me.”

Of course owner Jerry Jones was not happy about the problems on defense and recognized that something has to be done about them. Even hinting that more changes to the defensive staff might be coming. Jones said:

“I might not couch it as difficult,” he said of the possibility of making another change at defensive coordinator. “It’s certainly something that we have to do. And that is to look at the entire year and look at what our options are, and how to correct it so we’re not here at the same time next year. Now, that’s not uncommon to evaluate at this time of the year — your entire coaching staff.

“And, obviously, the target is on him because of our statistical, as well as actual play on the defensive side of the ball, but that goes with it.”

Prior to taking the coordinator position, Eberflus had been the head coach of the Chicago Bears. He was hired on January 27, 2022 but was fired on November 29, 2024, becoming the first Bears head coach to be fired mid-season. During his third season with the Bears, after entering the bye week with a 4–2 record, they dropped their next six games under Eberflus, which included several last-second losses. However, he does get credit for drafting Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze in the 2024 NFL Draft.

This is the fourth time in four seasons that the Cowboys have replaced the defensive coordinator. They’ll have to take their time and get it right moving forward.
