Dallas Cowboys Announced Mike Zimmer as Defensive Coordinator

Dallas Cowboys Announced Mike Zimmer Defensive Coordinator

Owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones was in Las Vegas over the weekend for the Super Bowl. It caused a bit of a delay on finalizing a deal. However, on Monday afternoon the Dallas Cowboys announced Mike Zimmer as their new defensive coordinator. Apparently, they had not quite come to terms last Thursday but finalized the deal today.

Mike Zimmer, who is 67, is replacing Dan Quinn who took the head coaching job with the Washington Commanders. Zimmer was previously with the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive assistant. He was later promoted to Defensive Coordinator from  2000 to 2006. It is of note that current head coach Mike McCarthy, who Zimmer will assist, is heading into the final year of his contract.

After leaving Dallas, between 2008 and 2013 he was defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. He then became the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014 to 2021. During his tenure there he led the Vikings to three playoff appearances and to the 2017 NFC Championship game. They lost to the Eagles 7-38. However, Zimmer has had great success with creating top 5 defenses throughout his career. Whether he was defensive coordinator or head coach.

Ed Werder of ESPN posted on his social media X account part of his conversation with Zimmer:

Mike Zimmer to me on returning to Dallas as DC: “I’m excited and honored to be back with a great organization. I’m thrilled to work with Mike McCarthy, for whom I have had a ton of respect in our NFC North days, and to do anything I can do to help the Joneses and the Cowboys.”

Obviously Mike Zimmer is happy to be back with the Dallas Cowboys. One of his tasks will likely be shoring up the Cowboys run defense which was pedestrian in 2023. But he does have some top tier players to work with including Micah Parsons.

On a side note, when Adam Schefter first broke the news about the Zimmer hire the report was disputed. By none other than the bombastic Rex Ryan. He said he didn’t believe it was a fact. That may have been because he himself had an interview for the defensive coordinator position. Perhaps he thought he was still in the running.

At any rate the team made the official announcement today so that dispute has been laid to rest. Maybe better luck next time Rex.
