That puts you in incredibly rare company, etching your name into the history books at every level. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the active players in the NBA at the moment who have completed basketball’s ultimate double.
Big Time Winners: Both NCAA and NBA
Alright, let’s begin:
Al Horford, Florida (2006, ’07), Celtics (2024)
The most recent star to add an NBA title to his NCAA Championship win is the ageless Al Horford, of the Boston Celtics. With five All-Star selections to his name as well; Al Horford is no stranger to success. And it all began for him at Florida University in 2004.
After acclimatizing himself with a steady 22 minutes, 5.6 points, and 6.5 rebounds per game as a freshman. Horford quickly became a key figure in the Gators roster as a sophomore. He boosted his averages to land 11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. Which then went up even further to 13.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game in his third season. In other words, he was the anchor of Billy Donovan’s back-to-back national title-winning teams in 2005-06, and 2006-07.
With two titles under his belt, it was time to test himself in the big leagues, and you bet the big man had an eager market. Standing at 6-foot-9, Horford was selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks. He averaged 10 points per game from the get-go and stayed at that mark for the first 15 years of his career; while also contributing plenty of rebounds.
Consistency and durability have been the story of Horford’s career. And he got the ultimate reward and blessing for his hard work when adding an NBA Championship to his impressive resume in the 2023-24 season with the Boston Celtics. At 36 years old, Horford logged 26.8 minutes per game, which yielded 8.6 points and 6.4 rebounds. While also popping up with 9 points and 9 rebounds in the final game of the NBA Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks. Can he get another NBA title in 2024-25 to give him two of each?
Current NBA Players Who Won Both NCAA and NBA Championships
Christian Braun, Kansas (2022), Denver Nuggets (2023)
Christian Braun has enjoyed one hell of a ride. He is just the fifth player in NBA history to win an NCAA and NBA championship in back-to-back seasons. He first made a name for himself as a Big 12 All-Freshman in the 2019-20 season, before improving each year after that. 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in 2020-2021, turned into 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in 2021-22; as Braun was a key contributor to the NCAA championship-winning Kansas Jayhawks.
Braun earned Second-team All-Big 12 honors for his efforts, and also played himself into the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft; where the Denver Nuggets picked him 21st overall. As a rookie, you couldn’t ask for a much better spot to land. Since Braun got to watch and learn from reigning MVP Nikola Jokic; and other top-tier players such: as Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr., and Aaron Gordon. With those guys dominating, Braun was only required to play 15 minutes a game, from which he posted 4.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He did, however, pop up with a big 15-point outing in the Finals against Miami, which the Nuggets went on to win in 5.
Since then, Braun has continued the same trajectory he showed at college. Improving every season, to average 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds for Denver in 2024-25. What a player.
Winners of Both NCAA and NBA Championships—Active Players
Donte DiVincenzo, Villanova (2016, ’18), Bucks (2021)
Donte DiVincenzo enjoyed not one, but two NCAA Championship wins with Villanova in college. The first came in his freshman season, as he watched and learned from his more senior teammates. Learning everything he needed to know to allow him to help lead the Wildcats to championship glory again in 2017-18. He, Jalen Brunson, and Mikal Bridges, were a force to be reckoned with on the court. Each shooting over 40% from deep, propelling Villanova to a nation-leading 86.6 points per game.
DiVincenzo played his part with 13.4 points per game, before earning NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. His 15 points and 8 rebounds helped the Wildcats secure a 95-79 win over Kansas in that Final Four outing. Then he went HAM. Showing off his big-game ability when landing 31 points on Michigan in the National Championship Game.
His good play also contributed to him being selected in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft; where he went 17th overall to Milwaukee. Here, he played a strong supportive role for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo for four seasons. Posting a then-career best 10.4 points per game in the 2020-21 season. Which also just so happens to be when he won the NBA Title. Unfortunately, an ankle injury prevented him from playing a major role in the playoffs. But he was a useful contributor in the regular season, helping set the team up for a successful playoff run.
Active Players With NBA and NCAA Titles
Anthony Davis, Kentucky (2012), Lakers (2020)
Anthony Davis is the biggest name to feature on this list. Having helped himself to 10 NBA All-Stars throughout his career. It all began for Davis back in Kentucky in 2011; when he needed only his freshman season to win a national championship and convince everyone that he was the next big thing.
Moreover, his 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.7 blocks per game made him an easy pick as a Consensus All-American and the National College Player of the Year. All before winning Final Four Most Outstanding Player as well. He was a rebounding machine in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 12.3 per game. Plus, posting an incredible 16 rebounds in the National Championship game.
Pegged as a generational prospect, Davis went first overall in the 2012 NBA Draft to New Orleans. Expectations were high for the youngster, but he delivered on them with no problem. Going on to average 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a rookie; before starting an impressive run of 13 straight seasons with an average of at least 20 points per game.
Davis was traded to the LA Lakers in 2019 to play alongside LeBron James, where he instantly took over as the team’s leading scorer on a per-game basis, en route to an NBA Championship. He had struck gold in his first season as a Laker, giving his career the ring it so clearly deserved.
While injuries have unfortunately become a more frequent problem for Davis. He still continues to deliver at a very high level ever since that title; and is locked and loaded as an all-time great. Now we await to see what he will accomplish with the Dallas Mavericks.
