Cubs Shota Imanaga’s ERA Drops Below 1.00

Cubs Shota Imanaga’s ERA Drops Below 1.00 to an Insane 0.96!

When batters see Chicago’s ace on the mound, they probably let out a VERY heavy sigh. The guy has been killing it. And being just one quarter into the 2024 season, the Cubs Shota Imanaga’s ERA has now dropped below 1.00 to an insane 0.96!

Nevertheless, that is not all. Shota may have some hits occurring or he is walking some guys. However, it must be noted that they are not scoring. In that sense, he is looking very Blake Snell-ish; and we all know what that led to for Snell last year.

Additionally, Imanaga’s dominance can really be scene in how he has handled his starts. Shota has allowed zero runs in five of his eight starts. Any manager, team and fanbase would love to have a starting pitcher with such a stat. Especially, coming from a starter that recently was acquired.

That is always one of the fears whenever a player comes under contract. Will he still perform? Or will he perform up to his contract expectations as well as potential?

Shota Imanaga’s Lowers ERA to 0.96

Well, this offseason signing of Shota Imanaga by the Chicago Cubs is proving to be one of the biggest steals thus far in MLB pitching. The Cubs snagged Imanaga for just $53 million. A real bargain when it comes to how much many franchises are having to shell out in order to get a lights out pitcher. For instance, last offseason the Phillies extended the highly productive Aaron Nola for $172 million.

Furthermore, the Phillies are also paying Zach Wheeler, $126 million for 3 years. Which works out to $42 million a year… just $11 million short of what the Cubs are paying for Shota for four years. So as we said, the Cubs got a steal.

They not only have an effective hurler on their hands, but they get to have him in their rotation for four years. And other pitchers so fair, although super good are not quite matching him in ERA just yet. However, there is still plenty of season left.

Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation adds a few other interesting details about Shota’s quest for a possible Cy Young win. He states,

“Shota Imanaga is leading [the] MLB with a 0.96 ERA. No other pitcher is even under 1.30 ERA. Only four pitchers are even under 2.00 ERA.”

Now of course, ERA only helps a team so much. A starting pitcher can consistently throw heat from the mound; but if the team’s offense is not performing as well, they can still lose the game. This is an area that the Cubs need to improve in this season. However, with a starter like Shota; once the offense finishes working out the kinks, Chicago will be even tougher competition.

At the time of this posting, the Cubs are currently tied with the Brewers for the top spot of their division. With 24 wins each. So then, the battle is on between these two franchises and pitching will definitely be one of the aspects that makes difference in the end.
