Craig Counsell Cubs New Manager

Craig Counsell Cubs New Manager-Becomes Highest Paid Manager in MLB

During the 2023 season the Cubs came so narrowly close to making the postseason. The franchise is now eager to do whatever it takes to make the playoffs and go deep. Their first act of business… a change in manager. With Chicago their motto for this off-season and 2024 seems to be out with the old and in with the new. In a shocking twist, Chitown announces Craig Counsell Cubs new manager while checks notes… still having another guy in the position!

Say what? Yes, the tea is piping hot and the drama is greasier than the bottom of a potato chips bag. The Cubs got their new guy before letting go of former manager, David Ross.

However, before this off-season twist occurred, there had been rumblings. Craig’s name keeps popping up with the assumption that he’s about to finally make a decision. ESPN’s Jeff Passan gets the party started by stating,

“There is growing belief that Craig Counsell could be leaving Milwaukee for another managerial job, sources tell ESPN. It will not be the Mets, who just hired Carlos Mendoza.”

Sports journalist, Ken Rosenthal then drops the bomb. Ken reveals,

“Craig Counsell will manage next season, but NOT the Brewers or Mets, sources tell The Athletic. He is heading to a team with an existing manager. Counsell getting five-year contract from Cubs worth more than $40M, league sources tell The Athletic. Will be highest-paid manager.”

Jeff Passan then backs up Ken Rosenthal’s bombshell with a few more tidbits. Passan says,

“The Chicago Cubs are hiring Craig Counsell as their manager, sources tell ESPN.

A blockbuster move for Chicago, which had David Ross as their manager but will now go with Counsell, who had spent the previous decade with their division rival Milwaukee. Ken Rosenthal was on it. Counsell is expected to receive an annual salary in excess of the near-$8 million Joe Torre received with the Yankees.”

Furthermore, whether you like it or not, Craig Counsell becoming the highest paid MLB manager will do wonders for improving manager pay. It’s a long season and everyone deserves to get a piece of the pie. Especially, when that pie is making billions yearly.

Jeff Passan agrees with these sentiments. Since if you want to keep good managers in the MLB you have to make it worth it. Regarding the Counsell’s enormous payday, Jeff explains,

“Craig Counsell’s $8 million-a-year deal with the Chicago Cubs is an industry-shaking deal. In recent years, multiple coaches have pointed out that it’s more lucrative financially to take a job with a college program than an MLB team. Counsell’s deal could help change that in MLB.”

Agreed. Definitely agree. This should crack the door open on franchises offering proper managerial contracts. Nonetheless, congrats to Counsell on his new job opportunity; and David Ross we eagerly await to see your next moves as well, nice job this season with the Cubbies.
