Cowboys Stay In-House Making Brian Schottenheimer Head Coach

This week has been a rapid-fire head coach hiring bonanza. The Bears hired Ben Johnson, the Jets hired Aaron Glenn, the Jaguars hired Liam Coen and now another spot has been filled. All the teams have conducted interviews with multiple candidates and Dallas was no different. However, they made the decision to stay in-house by making Brian Schottenheimer their new head coach. He will be replacing Mike McCarthy whom the Cowboys parted ways with this month after five seasons.

One of the candidates for the job was Kellen Moore the Eagles offensive coordinator. He held a virtual interview with the Cowboys prior to leading the Eagles to the NFC Championship Game. The interesting thing is that Schottenheimer was promoted to the role of offensive coordinator in 2023, following the departure of Kellen Moore from that role. Now it’s Schottenheimer who is taking the coaching reins over Moore.

Another interviewee for the position was Robert Saleh, former New York Jets head coach. According to reports, he will be returning to his former role of defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers prior to taking the Jets job.

There were many more potential candidates vying for the role including Leslie Frazier and Pete Carroll. Although Carroll never had a formal interview scheduled. Instead he has since agreed to terms with the Las Vegas Raiders. Whew the coaching carousel is out of control! It’s a good thing only the Saints have yet to fill their head coaching vacancy.

But regardless the Cowboys have made their decision and not a moment too soon. The coaching staff has taken a hit as four assistant coaches have jumped ship. One of whom is Al Harris who garnered a promotion under McCarthy to assistant head coach in 2024, after having served as defensive backs coach from 2020 through the 2023 season.

However, despite all of the qualified candidates, Schottenheimer’s resume speaks for itself. He has 28 years of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. He also has a football pedigree as the son of the late Marty Schottenheimer. His father has 200 regular-season wins during a long coaching career with multiple teams. This will be the 51 year-old Schottenheimer’s first head coaching position. In the past he has been a wide receiver coach, quarterback coach and offensive coordinator in many places.

Schottenheimer will have his hands full in this new capacity so he’ll need to get up to speed quickly. However, his first order of business will be a press conference on Monday, January 27. You can tune in to the official introductory press conference (bit.ly/3EmLzmk) Monday, January 27th at 11am CT.

Congratulations Coach Schottenheimer!
