Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones And Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon Both Fined

Emotions were running high this past weekend and a couple of guys let them get the best of them. Now it’s going to cost them for not keeping themselves in check. NFL owners and head coaches are expected to conduct themselves with decorum. But since that didn’t happen Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon were both fined as punishment for their actions. So what did they do and how much were they fined?

For starters Jones flipped his middle finger at someone in the crowd during the Jets game on Sunday. Then pointed at them to make sure they knew it was intended for them. However, after being called out for making the gesture, Jones claimed it was inadvertent. A video of Jones was posted by @TayFadesTV on x.com. Based on the video it didn’t appear to be inadvertent in the least. And the NFL didn’t buy that excuse either as he was slapped with a $250,000 fine.

Jones addressed the issue in his weekly radio interview. He stated:

“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans out in front — not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm of Cowboys and certainly late in the game.”

The offending gesture took place late in the game. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that Jones is likely to appeal the fine. But he has until Friday to make a final decision.

As for Gannon he had a sideline interaction with his own player, running back Emari Demercado. Gannon yelled in his face and then swiped his arm. It happened after Demercado had fumbled the ball out of the end zone before scoring what would have been a 72-yard touchdown. Therefore, the Cardinals are fining Gannon $100,000 for his sideline altercation with Demercado.

“We have been in contact with the NFL [Players Association], and the club which addressed the matter,” the league said in a statement obtained by Pelissero. “There is no further action from the league.”

Gannon apologized for his behavior. He said, “I woke up this morning and didn’t feel great about it, honestly,” the third-year head coach said. “So in the team meeting I addressed it, I apologized to Emari, apologized to the team. I just told them I let the moment of what happened get the better of me.”

Expensive lessons were hopefully learned by them both.
