Connecticut Sun Versus LA Sparks Sells Out TD Garden Making History
It is clear that the WNBA is having an amazing year. Sales are up. League value is up. And there only seems to be more momentum heading and projecting upward. Nevertheless, some wondered how the league would fare after the Olympic break; well… things are still going just fine. Case in point, the Connecticut Sun Versus LA Sparks Sells Out the TD Garden making history in the process.
What history? Well, for one thing, this is the very first WNBA game to be held at the storied TD Garden. Some other interesting facts about this particular game include:
- The Sun’s 19,156 tickets sold marks the sixth sell out of the 2024 season.
- It is also the third highest attendance to a WNBA game this season to date.
- And is the largest amount of tickets sold to a Connecticut Sun game in the franchise’s history.
Nice. For those may not know, TD Garden is the home of the 2011 Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins; as well as the 2024 NBA champs, the Boston Celtics. It is New England’s largest sports and entertainment arena; hosting over 3.5 million people a year. Therefore, the WNBA now using this facility is a pretty big deal.
Glen Thornborough, President of TD Garden and COO of the Boston Bruins; released a statement about Connecticut’s massive ticket sales. In the press release Thornborough states,
“We’re thrilled that our first-ever WNBA game at TD Garden, featuring the Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks, has sold out. This remarkable turnout showcases Boston’s deep support for women’s professional basketball and our vibrant sports scene. TD Garden broke attendance records with the first-ever Dunkin’ Women’s Beanpot earlier this year, and we are proud to keep the momentum and immense support of women’s sport going.”

Jen Rizzotti, the Connecticut Sun President; also shared a few thoughts about the Sun’s Garden sellout. Rizzotti mentions,
“We are thrilled with the reception from the Boston market for our game at TD Garden. It’s truly special to make history by hosting the first ever professional women’s basketball game in this arena, known for its incredible basketball prowess and championship culture. This is a tremendous opportunity to expose the Connecticut Sun brand by playing a game more centrally located to our New England fan base. Women’s sports are here to stay, and this is a wonderful celebration and confirmation of that fact.”
While this game was shown on local stations. Some felt that due to its historic nature; the game should of been broadcast on national TV. Unfortunately, it was not. However, the Sun fans still had plenty to cheer about. Connecticut took down the Sparks, 61-69. And now have a 20-7 record for the season. Which is the second best record in the entire league and in the Eastern Conference. So then, they are in a great position to make the playoffs.
Also, it was really cool to see some NBA support. The Celtics (and now Olympic gold medalists), Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday came out to support the Los Angeles versus Connecticut game. They sat court-side, took pics, cheered and even brought others. It was a long awesome sight and night to behold.
