Commanders' President James Wright Leaving After 2024 Season

Commanders’ President James Wright Leaving After 2024 Season

Becoming a president of an NFL team is quite an achievement. After all there are only 32 potential opportunities available. Now after reaching such a pinnacle, Commanders’ president Jason Wright will be leaving the organization after the 2024 season. Wright will no longer be the president, but will operate in a senior advisory role prior to his exit. The team will soon begin a search for his replacement. Wright said in a statement that helping the organization complete a new stadium deal will be a primary focus in his new role.

Wright made history by becoming the first black person to become president of an NFL team. At the time he was hired, prior to the 2020 season he was the youngest president in the league. And he was only the fourth former player to fill the role. Wright was a former running back who played for seven seasons but retired during the 2011 lockout. He decided to go to business school and landed a job with management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

Wright was brought on board when Dan Snyder was still the owner of the then Washington Redskins. His main focus was the business, operations, marketing and sales responsibilities instead of football operations. Wright took on this role at a time when there was much turmoil within the organization as well as being under multiple investigations regarding the workplace culture. And he was criticized for his handling of the name changing process. However, Wright did improve the HR department and foster a more diverse workplace. He also facilitated the transition of ownership to Josh Harris.

Josh Harris released the statement below:

“Jason has made a remarkable impact on the Commanders organization since he joined four years ago,” Harris said in a statement. “He stepped in at a time of immense challenge and has led this organization through an incredible transformation that set that stage for everything that is to come.

“I am extremely grateful to Jason for his partnership to me and the rest of the ownership group over the past year. His guidance has been invaluable and his leadership has helped reshape our culture. I want to thank him for his dedication to this team, our fans and the community. I’m grateful to have his support through this transition period as we begin the process of finding the next president of this organization.”

Certainly this will not be the end for Jason Wright. We’ll see what the future holds for him.
