A terrible tragedy was suffered yesterday with the death of another young athlete. This time the victim haled from the University of Colorado, the school coached by Deion “Prime Time” Sanders. Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Dominiq Ponder died in a one-car crash at the age of 23. Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla model 3 when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve. He crossed the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail and an electrical line pole. The car then slid down an embankment and caught fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened on early Sunday morning.

Currently the Colorado State Patrol is inspecting the crash, and speed is a suspected factor. In a statement released by Colorado athletic director, Fernando Lovo, he stated:

“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder. He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”

The CU athletics is making counseling resources available to student-athletes and staff to assist during this time of unthinkable loss.

Ponder, a junior from Miami and Naples, Florida, was entering his third season as a quarterback for the Buffaloes. He played in two games during the 2025 season and made his collegiate debut against Arizona. Ponder came to Colorado as a transfer from Bethune-Cookman and then Georgia Tech and redshirted his first season at CU.
