Cody Bellinger and Chicago Cubs Agree to Three-Year $80 Million Contract

It’s been a very long free agency… especially for clients of Scott Boras. Nevertheless, just a couple weeks out from the start of the 2024 season Chicago made a harder push in order to keep their centerfielder. After some talks and discussions, Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs agree to a three-year $80 Million Contract.

With the kind of season Bellinger had during 2023, you would think there would have been more interest in a player of his talent. However, the common theme was that his inconsistency over the years proved to be a concern for varying franchises. Nevertheless, the Cubs believe in Cody and are willing to give him the opportunity to once more prove that he truly has the goods.

This contract, isn’t completely locking him in and down. Yet, it will make sure he is properly paid for his time and efforts. ESPN’s Jeff Passan shares what he has learned so far about the new contract. Passan states,

“BREAKING: Centerfielder Cody Bellinger and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $80 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Bellinger will receive opt-outs after each of the first two years of the deal. Bellinger, 28, returns to the Cubs after a prolonged free agency.”

Yet, how does such a contract really breakdown financially for the Chicago ball club? ESPN goes on to report on that, and why it is justified after Cody Bellinger’s comeback year after two rather “down seasons.” They state,

Bellinger’s salary will pay him $30 million this season, $30 million in 2025 (if he doesn’t opt out after Year 1) and $20 million in 2026 (if he doesn’t opt out after Year 2), according to sources.

Bellinger, 28, returned to elite form after signing a one-year deal with the Cubs last offseason, hitting .307 with 26 home runs while finishing 10th in National League MVP voting. He was especially dangerous against left-handed pitching, hitting .337 with a .984 OPS.”

Well, Cody is now safely back among the Cubs with a nice deal making at least $30 million for the next two years; if he wishes to stay in Chi-town. Nevertheless, if he continues to play like he did in ‘23 no doubt the price for him will only go up. However, congratulations to Cubs fans, your CF is back in town.
