Coco Gauff Takes Down #1 Aryna Sabalenka To Win French Open Women’s Title

She had to overcome the deafening chants of the home crowd as she battled with French competitor Lois Boisson in the semi-finals. In her head, she chanted her own name to negate the roar of the spectators, defeating Boisson 6-1, 6-2. And then it was onto the finals where she would face the top-ranked woman in the tennis world. And yet Coco Gauff takes down #1 Aryna Sabalenka to win the French Open women’s title. Gauff won her first French Open title at Roland Garros winning her second Grand Slam singles title.

Her first Grand Slam singles title was the 2023 US Open women’s singles championship. She has reached the French Open final twice: 2022 and this year. And this year’s final got off to a shaky start for Gauff as she dropped the first set 6-7. However, in the second set she got out to a 4-1 lead, as Sabalenka continued to struggle with the unenforced errors. She had 32 unforced errors in the first set and added 15 more in the second set. Gauff had settled down by this point and took the second set 6-2.

But this game was especially grueling for both ladies as the weather conditions were brutal. They faced winds gusting up to 30 mph and commentator Greg Rusedski spoke about it on BBC Radio 5 Live. He stated:

“It is gusty out there! Look at the ball kids’ shirts,” said Rusedski during the first set. “The wind is really spinning in this stadium, so I think this is going to be a tricky opening game for Coco Gauff, especially with her service toss.” He also compared the match to a “yo-yo.” And added: “These conditions are so mentally challenging. If you just turn off for one second, the ball can just get away from you very quickly because of the gusts of wind. Both players are having to move their footwork constantly.”

Despite the difficult playing conditions and a match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes, Gauff won the third set 6-4 to earn the French Open title. She became the first American woman to win the French Open singles title since Serena Williams in 2015. And therefore Roland Garros has proclaimed her the new queen of Paris.

Sabalenka graciously congratulated Gauff on the win saying:

“Coco, congrats,” Sabalenka said. “In these tough conditions you were a better player than me. Well done on a great two weeks. Congrats on the second Grand Slam, well deserved here. You’re a fighter, hard worker, so congrats to you and your team.”

Gauff is only 21 and just hitting her stride so it seems. The two women have already gone head to head in 10 matches with the record being an even 5-5. We look forward to seeing many more epic battles between the #1 and #2 ranked tennis stars in the world. But in the meantime, congratulations Coco, queen of the clay!
