Coco Gauff Pulled Off Emotional Win In Second-Round Of U.S. Open Match
Double-faults have been the bane of her existence. Hence she hired a new coach to help her with her serve right before the next tennis tournament. Which just happened to be the U.S. Open, the event where she won her first major singles title in 2023. So naturally, she had some trepidation as she prepared to compete in this year’s Open. However, despite feeling a heavy burden on her shoulders, Coco Gauff pulled off an emotional win in the second-round of the U.S. Open match.
Gauff was riding high after her win at the Roland Garros Open in Paris earlier this year in June. But she didn’t fare so well in competitions following that event, including an early exit from Wimbledon. That combined with bringing in a new coach and returning to the place where she first won big all had her nerves jumping. So much so that she became overwhelmed with tears that just wouldn’t stop. She covered her face with a towel as she sat on the sideline. Even after she returned to the court after the changeover, she could still be seen dabbing her eyes between points.
Nevertheless she fought through the nerves and emotions and did what champions do. She found a way to win the game yesterday against Donna Vekic 7-6 (5), 6-2, eliminating Vekic from the tournament. But the war is far from over as she will next face Magdalena Fręch of Poland in the third-round on Saturday August 30. So she’ll need to keep her emotions in check as she works to get through to the finals. Fortunately U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, who was in attendance, was an inspiration to Gauff.
“She helped me pull it out. I was just thinking: If she could go on a 6-inch beam and do that, with all the pressures of the world, then I can hit the ball. … It brought me a little bit of calm, just knowing her story, with all the things she went through mentally,” Gauff said. “She’s an inspiration, surely.”

Based on her interview comments it seems she learned some lessons from the match. It was notable that she said:
“I just show people what it’s like to be a human, and I have bad days, but I think it’s more about how you get up after those bad moments and how you show up after that,” said Gauff, who is seeded No. 3 at Flushing Meadows, where she won the first of her two Grand Slam titles in 2023. “I think today I showed that I can get up after feeling the worst I’ve ever felt on the court.”
If she can build on this victory she could very well become unstoppable. And at only 21 years old she has plenty of time to really leave her mark on the tennis world.
