Coco Gauff And Others Disappointed In First-Round Losses At Wimbledon
It’s been less than a month since her triumphant win at the Roland-Garros French Open. At that time the world celebrated her gritty win over Aryna Sabalenka in very windy conditions. With that victory expectations were high that she would have success at the next major open, Wimbledon. However, it was not to be as Coco Gauff and others were disappointed in first-round losses at Wimbledon. Which was her third Grand Slam of the year.
Speaking on her experience Gauff spoke about the emotional element of the sport saying:
“I feel like mentally I was little bit overwhelmed with everything that came afterwards, so I didn’t feel like I had enough time to do, I guess celebrate and then also get back into it,” said Gauff, who lost Tuesday in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. “But it’s the first time, in this experience, like coming off a win and having to play at Wimbledon, and I definitely learned about what I would and would not do again.”
Part of Gauff’s issue is that she struggles playing on grass courts as opposed to clay. However, it is something she feels she can overcome as she stated:
“I have faith that if I can make these adjustments, I can do well here, I really do want to do well here, I’m not someone who wants to write myself off grass this early in my career, but I definitely need to make some changes if I want to be successful,” she said.
Gauff is currently ranked No. 2 in the world but she was defeated by Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska who is ranked No. 42. Yastremska played the game of her life as she comfortably dominated Gauff in the early rounds, something that Gauff is usually able to do. Instead Gauff played conservatively and double-faulted nine times in the match. This is not the first time Gauff has been stunned in her first round at Wimbledon. A couple of years back she was similarly knocked out by Sofia Kenin.

However, she did bounce back from the Wimbledon loss–she went on to lift her first Grand Slam in New York at the US Open that year. Maybe she’ll have that same success this year. But she is not alone in a disappointing Wimbledon loss. American Jessica Pegula and German Alexander Zverev each were shockingly ousted in the opening round of the tournament.
Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy, knocked out Pegula 6-2, 6-3 in 58 minutes. Later in the day, France’s Arthur Rinderknech notched the upset against Zverev 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4.
So Wimbledon was not kind to some of the best tennis players in the world this year. But there will be other tournaments coming up in which they can attempt to redeem themselves.
