Coco Gauff and Alex Eala Will Meet For First Time in Dubai WTA 1000 Quarterfinals

Now this is going to be REAL good! A showdown that tennis enthusiasts have been waiting on to occur. This Thursday, Coco Gauff and rising star Alex Eala will meet for the first time in the Dubai WTA 1000 Quarterfinals.

Gauff has been able to bounce back as of late. She eliminated Anna Kalinskaya in two sets 6-4 6-4 and qualified for the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 in Dubai. Furthermore, on February 18, Coco faced off against Mertens. After saving three match points, Gauff defeated Belgian Elise Mertens (2-6, 7-6, 6-4); however, she committed 16 double faults. Still Gauff demonstrated plenty of fight in order to win the thrilling three-set duel against Elise Mertens, securing her spot in the quarterfinals.

However, from her performances Coco does have some work and things to clean up when it comes to her play, like her serve. But despite mistakes, Gauff continues to push forward with much tenacity. Her never give up attitude is powerful and paying dividends. According to sports stats platform, OptaAce, “Coco Gauff is the second-youngest player to claim 100 Tier I/WTA-1000 main draw wins since the format’s introduction in 1990, older only than Martina Hingis.

Way to go Gauff. Nevertheless, now what about Eala? Alex is the youngest Asian woman to have top 10 wins in multiple Tier 1/WTA 1000 events. Previously, Naomi Osaka held this distinction.

Since the Tier format’s introduction in 1990, Alexandra Eala (20 years 268 days) is now the youngest Asian player to claim WTA top 10 wins at multiple Tier I/WTA-1000 events, surpassing Naomi Osaka (20 years 350 days). She is a special player doing special things.

On Wednesday, Alex Eala showed nerves of steel once more to book a quarterfinals seat in the Dubai Tennis Championship against Coco Gauff. To get to the next round she had to contend with Cirstea (the World #32). Alex Eala snatched the first set of her Round of 16 matchup against Sorana Cirstea at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Then closed out the match in the second set. Alex beat Sorana Cirstea, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the Last 8.

After her match against Cirstea, Eala had some kind words for Coco and is looking forward to them meeting up, just like the fans. She says, “If I continue like this, the next match will be great. I’m looking forward to it. Coco is such an amazing person. We tend to forget that she’s just a year older than me. She’s a great role model for so many.” Very nice. Looking forward to these ladies facing off on the court.
