Cleveland Guardians Owner Larry Dolan Passed Away At 94
A native of Cleveland, he was passionate about baseball. As such, he went on a quest to gain entry into professional baseball ownership. And in February 2000, the perfect opportunity arose to make his dream come true. The then Cleveland Indians were up for sale by owner Dick Jacobs. In his 70’s Dolan purchased his favorite baseball team. Sadly, the team announced on Monday that Cleveland Guardians owner Larry Dolan had passed away at 94.
Dolan was a former St. Ignatius high school football player who played on offense and defense. He also played catcher on the baseball team. He helped lead the team to their first ever charity game victory and only second city championship in school history.
The Guardians organization posted a statement on X.com (formerly twitter) on the passing of Dolan:
“The Cleveland Guardians are saddened to announce the passing of Lawrence Dolan, owner of the Cleveland Guardians. Larry purchased the Cleveland Baseball Club on February 15, 2000, from Richard Jacobs. The 2025 season is the 26th year of ownership for the Dolan family, the longest and one of the most successful tenures in franchise history. Larry was 94 years old.”
Bob DiBiasio, Guardians SVP/Public Affairs praised the many virtues of Dolan. He said “Mr. Dolan invested his entire life in Greater Cleveland and impacted our community on so many levels. From his service to our country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines, his many philanthropic acts of kindness, career in law, business, education, and sports, many benefited from his engagement, influence, and passion. Especially in the world of sports. We are forever grateful for his passion in supporting the Northeast Ohio community and our franchise.”

Furthermore, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred also expressed his sorrow over the passing of Dolan. He says:
“I am saddened by the passing of Cleveland native Larry Dolan, whose family’s quarter-century ownership has made their hometown team a consistent winner and a staple of their community,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “Larry was a lifelong baseball fan who served our country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines. He strongly believed in mentoring young people and using the Guardians as a way to impact Greater Cleveland. Larry also served the industry by bringing his professional expertise to the Major League Executive Council and the Ownership Committee, and he served on two labor negotiating committees.
“On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to Paul Dolan and the entire Dolan family.”
Dolan’s son Paul is the chairman and CEO of the team and will continue the family’s longest tenure of ownership in franchise history. However, that doesn’t change the fact of how much Larry will be missed.
