Cleveland Browns Will Start Shedeur Sanders As The Quarterback For Week 12
He was the most talked about draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite being projected as a first-round or early second-round pick he fell to the fifth round of the draft. It was the Cleveland Browns who pulled the trigger and took him with the 144th overall pick. Likely being the son of legendary Hall of Famer Deion Sanders didn’t help his draft standing. However, he’ll have a chance to prove his worth. The Cleveland Browns will start Shedeur Sanders as the quarterback for Week 12.
Many people had expressed ill-will towards Sanders believing that he was too arrogant and too cocky. He grew up with privilege given that his father Deion Sanders had already played both professional football and baseball. And his family was featured in two different reality TV shows: Deion And Pilar: Prime Time Love (2008) and Deion’s Family Playbook (2014 – 2015). So naturally people assumed he was wealthy and didn’t need the added advantage of being highly drafted.
In addition, to the money made from the television shows he is also estimated to have earned $6.5 million in NIL deals during his college career. If that’s the case then his NIL earnings are higher than the four-year, $4.6 million contract he signed with the Cleveland Browns. Needless to say that amount of NIL money hasn’t sat right with people who would rather not see him do well at the NFL level.
And not doing well is what happened to Shedeur this past Sunday when he was called into action against the Baltimore Ravens. Starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel went out of the game with a concussion. The Browns had already traded veteran Joe Flacco to the Bengals and Bailey Zappe was on the practice squad. So that left Shedeur Sanders to go cold, into the game. This after after not taking snaps with the No. 1s in the preseason or practices.

For anyone who watched the game it was clear that Sanders struggled coming off the bench. He completed 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards, one interception and a 13.5 passer rating. However, in spite of the lackluster stats he moved the Browns into scoring position to win the game. But the Ravens pressure on him was too great and they lost 23-16. Fortunately he will be getting reps this week with the first-team offense. So a better outcome is expected for Sanders and the Browns.
How each team handles their rookie quarterbacks’ development and the practices varies from team to team. But for Sanders to have any success he’s going to need support from his coaching staff. We hope head coach Kevin Stefanski is ready to do so. Otherwise it won’t matter who is the starting quarterback. Particularly if you look at the Browns’ awful history with former quarterbacks. Maybe ask Baker Mayfield how things worked out for him?
