Cleveland Browns Traded Quarterback Joe Flacco To Cincinnati Bengals

Well that didn’t take long but it happened faster than most people thought it would. Particularly since the Browns now have two rookie quarterbacks on their roster who were expected to learn from the 18-year veteran. Hopefully they absorbed as much as they could because now the veteran is gone. Today it was announced that the Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have been on a losing streak without their franchise quarterback, Joe Burrow.

According to Adam Schefter, “Browns are trading QB Joe Flacco and a 6th-round pick to the Bengals for a 5th-round pick.” This had been Flacco’s second stint with the Browns he was previously with the team in 2023 in which he started five games. He had provided a spark for the team but they didn’t re-sign him so he spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts. Flacco was brought back to Cleveland this season, starting in the first four games.

During those four weeks Flacco completed 58.1% of 160 pass attempts for 815 passing yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions. But then rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was given the starting job prior to Week 5, after a 1-3 start for Flacco. Gabriel got to make his NFL debut at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England. That’s a big stage but he almost helped his team to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings. In the end the Vikings prevailed 21-17 over the Browns.

So now without Flacco’s presence where does this leave the two rookie quarterbacks? They do have Bailey Zappe on Cleveland’s practice squad. He spent 2022 and 2023 with the Patriots where he began his NFL career. Last year he was on Cleveland’s roster. As far as veteran experience goes, not sure how much Zappe has to offer Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders.

Now that the Bengals have acquired Flacco, they aren’t letting any grass grow under his feet. They would like for him to start the game on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Ironically the Browns beat the Packers 10-13 in Week 3. Certainly the Bengals will want him to repeat that success for them. The Bengals had been using Jake Browning at quarterback but he lost all three of the games he has started.

Head coach Zac Taylor apparently lost confidence in Browning and decided a change was needed. Some had thought the Bengals might try to work out a deal for Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston or Kirk Cousins. But in the end they went for Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco. Can he change the trajectory for the Bengals and get them on a winning path? It will be interesting to get the answer to that question.
