Cleveland Browns Named Todd Monken To Be Their New Head Coach

Another one bites the dust as a head coaching position is filled by the northern Ohio team. There are now two head coaching positions left to be filled in the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders. It was thought the opening in Cleveland was coming down to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaas. But today the Cleveland Browns named Todd Monken to be their new head coach. Monken had previously worked as the Browns offensive coordinator in 2019.

In addition to that he has multiple years of coaching experience. At the collegiate level he led Southern Miss from 2013-2015. Although he only compiled a 13-25 record with the team he helped the program improve every season. Monken also won two CFP National Championships working as Georgia’s offensive coordinator from 2020-2022. For the last three seasons he has been working as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He played a role in helping quarterback Lamar Jackson win a second MVP. Under his watch the Ravens finished No. 1 in yards and No. 3 in points in 2024.

Monken at age 59 will become the Browns 19th full-time head coach. This is Monken’s first head coach position since his 11 years in the NFL. Apparently the Browns wanted to go with a more offensive-minded coach rather than defensive. Hence why Schwartz missed out on the opportunity. There were concerns about who Schwartz might choose for his offensive coaching staff. But he will likely be retained as the defensive coordinator. As for Scheelhaase he could have been the young, fresh innovator but the Browns chose to go with the known.

“We are very excited to name Todd Monken the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns,” Managing and Principal Partners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. “Todd is highly intelligent, and his experienced, innovative offensive mindset has been at the forefront of constructing productive and successful offenses at the NFL and collegiate level over the last 20 years. He is an outstanding leader and has a clear vision to lead our team as a strong communicator who values trust with his players but also accountability and preparation. In our committee’s exhaustive reference work on Todd, his commitment to player development was evident, and his tough and straightforward coaching is respected by the players and the coaches he’s worked with, putting our team in a position to succeed while developing our players to maximize their talents. We welcome Todd, Terri, and the rest of the Monken family back to the Browns and look forward to him establishing the winning culture that will lead our team to the success our fans so deserve.”

Congrats to Monken on landing his first NFL head coach position!
