Cleveland Browns Announced Joe Flacco Will Be Their Starting Quarterback
It was expected to be a battle of the quarterbacks at training camp. However, it never came to fruition as multiple quarterbacks dealt with various injuries. But despite the failure of a battle to emerge there is still the question of how many quarterbacks will remain on the roster. Nevertheless, today the Cleveland Browns announced that veteran Joe Flacco will be their starting quarterback. Flacco looked to be in control of the starting job from the very beginning.
It was thought that Kenny Pickett had a good shot at competing for the QB1 job. However, he suffered a hamstring injury three weeks ago and hasn’t played in any preseason games. At the beginning of August Pickett was asked about winning the starting job and he said:
“Yeah, 100% it is,” Pickett said Saturday when asked if he possessed the same determination and mindset of becoming QB1 as he did before the injury, per team transcript. “I’m trying to get back out there, you know, as fast as possible. I’ve never had, you know, a soft tissue injury like this, so really a first-time experience in my career, I felt like I came in great shape, was hitting numbers speed wise that I’ve never hit before. So, it’s frustrating that it happened but you know, turn the page and just trying to be, you know, as good as I can be when I do return.”
And then there was third round-draft pick Dillon Gabriel and fifth-round draft pick Shedeur Sanders. Like Pickett, Dillon dealt with a hamstring injury but was able to start the second preseason game. Whereas Sanders made a good showing when he started the first preseason game but then in camp suffered an oblique injury. However, most believe that neither young quarterback posed a threat to Flacco winning the starting job.
Cleveland Browns Announced Joe Flacco Will Be Their Starting Quarterback
As mentioned by the team’s website, Flacco is entering his 18th NFL season and brings a level of veteran leadership necessary to kick off the 2025 season. He’s also led the Browns’ offense before, back in 2023 when he started five consecutive games beginning in Week 13. During that stretch, the Browns went 4-1 with Flacco at quarterback. So it makes sense all around for Flacco to once more be the starting quarterback.
“The last couple of weeks, honestly, it’s been pretty good for me,” Flacco said on Aug. 13. “I’ve gotten to get more reps and get comfortable and feel like I’m doing things at a pretty high level.”
We used to call him “Joe Cool” because he was good under pressure. And this training camp has been a good reminder of why he got his nickname. We’ll see if any of the other quarterbacks will be able to wrestle the position from him in the future.
