Cincinnati Reds Demolish The Orioles At Baltimore With 24 Runs

Heading into the 3rd inning the score was tied at one a piece. But in that inning things got real hot and the rout was on. The Cincinnati Reds proceeded to demolish the Orioles at their Camden Yards home in Baltimore with 24 runs. Yes you read that correctly, 24 runs! The Reds haven’t had a win like this since 1911 when they scored a 26-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. That game remains the team’s all-time single-game record.

Cincinnati had several hits (25) and of course runs (24) but one of the most spectacular plays of the game came from Elly De La Cruz. He made the most ridiculous catch to deprive Jackson Holliday of a hit. De La Cruz took a couple steps then fully extended his body to snag the catch. Preventing it from going to centerfield and possibly being a base hit. Check out the amazing catch in the clip posted by MLB on x.com (formerly Twitter).

But in addition to the acrobatics of De La Cruz plenty of other Reds players stepped up to the plate. All but one of the team’s batters recorded at least one run on Sunday. Gavin Lux and Austin Hays each racked up four scores garnering the most runs for the team. Noelvi Marti did his part by leading the team with seven RBI’s. Marti, along with Elly De La Cruz and Austin Wynns,  smashed in home runs. It was De La Cruz’s home run at the top of the third inning that got the scoring party started for Cincinnati. By the end of the third, the Reds were up 8-1 and the bloodbath would continue.

Naturally after taking a beating like that the Orioles manager, Brandon Hyde was less than pleased. His after game statement to the press was beyond brief as he simply stated: “That’s embarrassing.”

The Orioles are off to a 9-12 start this season and some say it’s the pitching. Starting pitcher Charlie Morton has been struggling and was charged with seven earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings of the game. Cody Poteet came in and yielded five earned runs of his own. And sadly things continued to go downhill from there with the score being 12-1 after five innings.

But despite the pitching, the Orioles were dominated in almost every way in the disastrous game. So, now the Orioles have to find a way to shake it off and get ready to play the Nationals next. But at least they will have a much-needed day off on Monday before they start the series with Washington.
