Cincinnati Reds Acquire the Pirates 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes For Stafura and Rogers

More trade action going up on a Wednesday. The Reds have been desiring to get stronger on defense and they made a move in order to make that happen. Cincinnati Reds acquire the Pirates 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes in exchange for Sammy Stafura and Taylor Rogers.

Stafura, 20, was with Class-A Daytona, hitting .262 with four home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games. He was a 2023 second-round pick by Cincinnati. While Rogers, 34, appeared in 40 games for the Reds this year, compiling a 2.45 ERA while giving up just three home runs in 33 innings. He will be a free agent after this season.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news stating, “BREAKING: The Cincinnati Reds are acquiring third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. Hayes is among the best defensive players in baseball and has five years of club control beyond this season.”

Pirates beat writer, Noah Hiles adds a bit more perspective on this shakeup affecting the Pittsburgh organization. Hiles mentions,

“Source confirms Ke’Bryan Hayes is heading to the Reds for Taylor Rogers and Sammy Strafura (Reds #9 prospect). I’m told the Reds will take on all of Hayes’ deal. Rogers’ money makes this a wash financially for the rest of the season. Jared Triolo will take Hayes’ spot at third base. Pirates now can shop for third basemen this offseason.”

Hayes, 28, is in his sixth MLB season and in the middle of an eight-year, $70 million contract signed in 2022. He will remain under Reds’ control through 2029. While he isn’t known for being an offensive threat, he is known for being a defensive beast.

A Gold Glove Award winner, Hayes recorded 21 Defensive Runs Saved to lead all MLB third basemen in 2023. Also, Hayes combined for 36 Outs Above Average over the 2022 and 2023 season. Something the Reds seriously considered when looking at Hayes.

Nevertheless, it looks like the Reds are still in the market to add even more to their roster. Especially, when it comes to strengthening and tightening things up with their hurlers. According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network,

“Ke’Bryan Hayes traded to Cincinnati, and the Reds are not done yet. I’m told the Reds are working to add pitching before Thursday’s trade deadline.”

Very interesting. Cincinnati is three games back in the race for the final National League wild-card spot entering Wednesday’s games. Therefore, it looks like the ball club is going for it, and pushing to get to the postseason.
