Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson Unhappy With Contract Negotiations

The Cincinnati Bengals recently made a big splash when they signed their top offensive weapons. After much encouragement from quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals signed wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to big contracts. In addition, they re-signed or extended other players to keep their roster intact. However, they still have a big signing to get done and things don’t appear to be going well. In fact the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive end Trey Hendrickson is unhappy with contract negotiations.

Initially the club let Hendrickson explore the market to see what his value might be to other teams. Even allowing him to seek a trade. However, to this point neither a trade nor an extension has come to fruition. Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn spoke about the situation at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting. She stated:

“So he seemed to feel strongly about it, and thought the strength of interest out there was going to be at a certain level. And so, we said that it would be OK to at least explore, and so we don’t do that all the time, but in this case, we felt like it was the right thing to do, case-by-case basis every time. And he’s still a Bengal, so we’ll see. It’s just something that we’ll keep working through.”

But Blackburn didn’t stop there and it was her additional comments that led to further disgruntlement for Hendrickson. Feeling that the team has made what it feels like is a competitive offer she went on to say:

“I think he should be happy at certain rates that maybe he doesn’t think he’d be happy at,” Blackburn said. “I think some of it is on him to be happy at some point, and if he’s not, you know, that’s what holds it up sometimes. So, you know, it takes him to say yes to something, and also, we have all the respect in the world for him. He’s been a great player. We’re happy to have him. And so maybe we’ll find a way to get something to work. We’re just gonna see where it goes.”

On the The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday Hendrickson expressed his displeasure. He told the host:

“That was a little disappointing because communication has been poor over the last couple of months,” Hendrickson said. “That’s something that I hold in high regard. They have not communicated with my agent directly. It’s been something that’s been a little bit frustrating, but again, this is the business of it. I’m incredibly blessed to be in the NFL, and I’m excited to be a Bengal, right?”

So will communication improve between the two parties? Or will Hendrickson agree to the offer from the Bengals? We can only wait to see how things unfold.
