Cincinnati Bengals Signed Rookie DE Shemar Stewart To Contract Ending Holdout
It’s always easier to put a puzzle together when you have all the pieces. And every season each NFL team has to put together their own roster puzzles. Clearly it’s easier to build a roster when you have all the players in place. Yesterday it was reported that the Cincinnati Bengals signed rookie DE Shemar Stewart to a contract, ending his holdout. Today the team made it official that Stewart had been signed. More details on the contract was provided by Adam Schefter who posted:
“Just in: Shemar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals reached agreement on a four-year, fully guaranteed $18.97 million contract that includes a $10.4 million signing bonus, per his agent Zac Hiller of LAA. Every 2025 first-round pick now has a deal. With Shemar Stewart under contract, the Bengals now can devote all their energy and attention to holdout Trey Hendrickson.”
Earlier this year the Bengals finally got their two wide receivers signed, Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase. But it took quite some time to make those deals happen. Now that they have Stewart under contract they will need to turn their attention to Hendrickson who has been unhappy with contract negotiations. He wants a new contract and right now the Bengals don’t seem inclined to provide one. Therefore Hendrickson is a holdout.
As for Stewart, he was the Bengal’s first-round draft pick out of Texas A&M University. With the signing of Stewart they now have signed all of their six selections in the 2025 NFL Draft. While in college, Stewart played in 37 games and started in 19 during his three seasons (2022-24) with the Aggies. He amassed 65 tackles, 11 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, four pass breakups, one FF and two FRs in his career. And he earned third-team All-Southeastern Conference honors as a junior last season.

The Bengals and Stewart were able to reach a deal by compromising on the language within the contract. According to ESPN Bengals reporter Ben Baby, “Stewart will receive a more lucrative payout structure than previous picks at No. 17 for accepting the new language the Bengals placed in the team’s rookie contracts.” Director of player personnel Duke Tobin said he believed the Bengals were one of the last teams to insert such language into their rookie contracts.
The Bengals have their top offensive players and now they have to finish shoring up their defense. Appeasing Trey Hendrickson seems to be a necessary piece of their roster puzzle. We’ll see if they decide to make that happen.
