The past week has been a good one for the superstar running back. Christian McCaffrey landed a contract extension and the Madden NFL 25 cover. Pro Football Talk reported last week that the 49ers replaced his previous contract with this new one. Overall $38 million in new money was added to the contract, making it a a four-year, $62.2 million contract. And even better, the contract includes 24 million in full guarantees. Whereas he previously had no guarantees in his contract.

McCaffrey will now average  $15.55 million per year which will keep him as the highest paid running back. He edges out Alvin Kamara who is currently earning $15 million per year. Both have done well with their contracts considering running backs always have a tough fight getting fairly compensated. As Pro Football Talk pointed out, “most high-end running backs are struggling to get into eight figures at all.”

It’s fair to say that McCaffrey plays a large role in the 49ers offense. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year he led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459) and yards from scrimmage (2,023) while finishing tied for the most total touchdowns (21). McCaffrey was very happy with the extension and had this to say:

“I really appreciate the players on the team. Any time you sign an extension, obviously, you are individually really happy but then you also have to think about the other guys on the team who helped you get there and are a big part of your individual success,” McCaffrey said. “I’m really thankful that I am on a team with guys like that – with a great staff, overall great organization that takes care of the players. I’ve had nothing but an amazing experience in my time here, and I’m really fired up that I’m staying.”

And in more good news for McCaffrey, he was unveiled as the Madden 25 cover athlete. He’s the first 49ers player to be featured on the cover in 25 years. The last one to do it was Garrison Hearst in 1999 on the EA (Electronic Arts) video game international cover. A trailer for Madden NFL 25 will premier on June 13 and the official release date of the game is set for August 16.

This has been a great offseason for McCaffrey. He’s fired up to be with the 49ers for several more years. And I’m fired up to watch him work in the upcoming season. The man is a beast and now he has so much fuel to add to his fire, congrats CMC!
