It’s been a busy weekend with lots of breaking news. Two veterans, Chris Jones and Baker Mayfield, ink mega deals with their respective teams, Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Chris Jones has been the top defensive end for the Chiefs, while Baker Mayfield quarterbacked the Buccaneers to the playoffs. Both men are crucial to the success of their teams.

Chris Jones, the three time Super Bowl winner and five time Pro Bowler has spent his entire 8 year career with the Chiefs. And now he’s getting a huge contract. According to what Jones’ agents told Adam Schefter:

“The specific details are still being finalized, but Jones will sign a five-year contract in which all the money in the first three years — $95 million — is guaranteed.” Schefter further specified that, “Once the contract is signed, Jones will have the highest-ever average annual salary for a defensive tackle, surpassing those of Nick Bosa ($34 million), Aaron Donald ($31.6M), T.J. Watt ($28M) and Joey Bosa ($27M).”

No doubt the Chiefs and Jones were glad to get a deal done. Especially before the new league year commences next week.

There is also good news for Baker Mayfield. After having multiple coaches and offensive coordinators it appears Mayfield may finally have found a permanent home. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, “Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield are closing in on a three-year deal for $100M in total. And $50M guaranteed, max $115M.”

Adam Schefter followed up with this post on X: Baker Mayfied confirmed the three-year deal. “I wanted a chance to come back,” Mayfied said. “I love coach Bowles and the staff. I’m happy to be here and I want to win more in the postseason.”

The Buccaneers signed wide receiver Mike Evans to a deal a few days ago. Evans had expressed a desire to stay with the team and continue playing with Mayfield. Keeping both veterans will maintain chemistry and consistency for the team.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl and will look to keep adding to their legacy. And the Buccaneers eliminated the Eagles from the playoffs and will want to build on that success. Now that they have signed their star players both teams look to be formidable competitors.
