Chiefs Travis Kelce Fastest Tight End in NFL History to Reach 12,000 Career Receiving Yards
He’s one of the best players of the game. And he continues to prove why. Number 87 on Sunday once again put himself in the history books. The Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce became the fastest Tight End in NFL history to reach 12,000 career receiving yards.
How much faster did Kelce achieve this historic milestone than the previous record holder? Travis hit this mark in just 172 games. The 35-year-old tight end passed the previous mark set by fellow Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez, who accomplished the feat in 210 games.
The play that helped Travis Kelce hit 12K was epic, of course. The Chiefs were down and trailing the Los Angeles Chargers in the 4th quarter. However, a typical Mahomes to Kelce connection occurred that would save the day.
After hiking the ball, the Chargers heavily pressured Patrick Mahomes; but Mahomes is able to scramble long enough for Travis to get open for a big time catch. The Chiefs get the first down and put themselves into a position to make a game winning kick. Chiefs kicker Matthew Wright, kicks a field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter, knocking it off the left upright and through giving Kansas City a 17-19 victory. And also resulting in the Kansas City Chiefs clinching their ninth straight AFC West title.

Travis also just made headlines for a prestigious nomination. Just last week, the NFL announced the 32 nominees for the “league’s most prestigious honor” – the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. An accolade given to NFL players for excellence on and off the field. This award was established in 1970 and eventually renamed after Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton in 1999. This year’s nominees include Maxx Crosby, Adam Thielen and Jared Goff; to name a few.
Only four active NFL players have won the award: Cameron Heyward (2023), Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson and Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell. Could Kelce soon add his name to this list?
Well we soon find out. We are mere weeks away now. The winner of this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide will be announced live at the NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m.
