Chiefs Survive and Remain Undefeated Against Broncos After a Botched Field Goal
The epic run this season continues! It’s always exciting to see if teams can run the gamut and go the entire season without a single loss. And right now Kansas City is looking like a team that could definitely do it, as everything just seems to be going their way and following effortlessly into place. In a Sunday morning thriller, the Kansas City Chiefs survive and remain undefeated against the Broncos after a botched field goal.
What the heck did we all just see? In the final seconds of the fourth quarter. Patrick Mahomes and others could be seen pacing the sidelines; almost accepting their fate. But then, in true Chiefs fashion, a light at the end of the tunnel arrives. A mistake by the Broncos.
The game had been extremely tight. And it was a low scoring game. Both teams defenses made the other’s offense really work for the win.
In the fourth quarter there was only a two point difference between the two teams. The scoreboard read 14-16. All the Broncos had to do in the final seconds was make a field goal and they would walk away with season bragging rights and as the victors.
Of course, with field goals a million things can still go wrong. Many times we have watched an Ace Ventura wide kick lose a game. Or a bad snap. Well, when it came to the Broncos it looked like the pressure was too much. An extremely horrible snap resulted in a blocked kick; and with no time left to do anything else; the game came to a conclusion. The Chiefs would stay flawless and move to 9-0.
Furthermore, we have to give Kansas City their props. This is a team that has been getting it done despite numerous injuries and challenges. To go this many weeks with key guys missing on the team is also a feat.

But now our minds continue to move to the future. Could the Chiefs remain undefeated and win the Super Bowl? Winning another Super Bowl would be historic for other reasons; but doing it undefeated would put them on another level and in another category.
As the Pro Football Hall of Fame points out:
“The 1972 Miami Dolphins finished 17-0 and won Super Bowl VII over the Washington Redskins. The ’72 Dolphins have remained the only NFL team to complete an entire season undefeated. [Over] fifty years have passed since the 1972 Miami Dolphins posted the NFL’s only “perfect season,” an achievement that has gotten better with age.
If the Patriots were able to beat the Giants, an argument could be made that New England’s feat was more difficult than Miami’s – because it came in a longer season and in an era of free agency that promotes parity. But David Tyree’s miraculous 32-yard helmet catch that set up Eli Manning’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress left New England imagining what could have been.
“That was the closest anybody has gotten,” Griese said. “I’m a big fan of Eli Manning to this day for making the plays and throwing that ball the guy caught upside his helmet.”
Yep, teams have tried. But come up short. Therefore, can they do it? Can the Chiefs be perfect? The next several weeks shall tell the tale.
