Chiefs Subdued The Steelers And Clinched No.1 AFC Seed

Christmas Day had been the domain of the NBA for years. But this year the NFL decided to dip it’s toe into the holiday market. Starting with the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers. Later would be the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans. Two big AFC showdowns like this was sure to please NFL fans everywhere. The Steelers were still trying to wrap up the AFC North division while the Chiefs sought to clinch the No. 1 AFC playoff spot. And the first matchup was good for the Chiefs as they subdued the Steelers and clinched that No. 1 AFC seed.

This was the second game in five days played by the Chiefs but you couldn’t tell by how they played. They came out firing on all cylinders, marching down the field with relative ease. Before the first quarter was over they were up 13-0. They missed the extra point on their first touchdown. Meanwhile Russell Wilson and the Steelers looked sluggish and couldn’t get much offense going. They punted on their first two possessions and then were intercepted on their third possession. Initially Jaylen Warren had scored a touchdown but it was nullified by an offensive holding penalty. On the next play, Wilson’s pass for Pat Freiermuth was intercepted by Justin Reid.

The Steelers defense stepped up and forced a three and out and the Chiefs punted. And the Steelers offense finally put together a sustained drive, going 72 yards in 12 plays. Wilson ran the ball one yard into the end zone for the touchdown. Both teams punted after that score. The Steelers defense did a better job of shutting down the Chiefs. But the Steelers offense continued to struggle. So at halftime the Chiefs were up 13-7.

Apparently the Chiefs realized they had gotten away from doing what they had done early in the game. So when they started the third quarter they went 54 yards down the field and kicked a 32-yard field goal. But the Steelers responded with a 47-yard drive that included a 15-yard scramble by Wilson. They settled for a 36-yard field goal. Pittsburgh’s defense then allowed a 92 yard drive by the Chiefs culminating with a Kareem Hunt touchdown.

Freiermuth caught a pass but it was knocked out of his hands before he hit the ground and the Chiefs recovered it. The Chiefs capitalized on the turnover with Travis Kelce scoring a 12-yard touchdown. That basically sealed the game for the Chiefs as Pittsburgh turned the ball over on downs. And there were only punts after that. Final score 29-10.
