Chiefs Outlasted the Ravens And Headed Back to Super Bowl

It was the first time the Ravens would host the AFC Championship game. But it didn’t turn out the way they hoped that it would. Instead the Kansas City Chiefs outlasted the Baltimore Ravens are headed back to the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs won the coin toss and elected to defer. Then the Ravens went three and out the Chiefs promptly followed up with a touchdown. It seemed to be an ominous start for the Ravens. However, they came right back with a scoring drive of their own. Lamar Jackson scrambled around was almost sacked and got away. He then threw a deep pass to Zay Flowers for a 30 yard touchdown pass.

However, Patrick Mahomes didn’t have an incomplete pass going into the second quarter. Until the Ravens defense finally had a pass defensed around the 14 minute mark. After scrambling around he too was able to elude the Ravens defenders and connect with Kelce on a critical third down. Isaiah Pacheco finished the drive with a two yard touchdown run.

Nothing was going well for the Ravens offense in the second quarter. However, the defense stopped Kansas City on fourth down. But the offense couldn’t capitalize and had to punt. Kansas City closed out the first half with a field goal and a score of 17-7.

All season the Ravens had been known to come alive in the second quarter. But it didn’t happen this time. Despite the Chiefs offense not  scoring any points, the Ravens continued to shoot themselves in the foot. Zay Flowers just fumbled the ball before he could get it into the end zone which the Chiefs recovered. Their next drive produced an interception in the end zone.

Eventually the Ravens did score a field goal but that wasn’t enough. They had plenty of opportunities to score and just made one mistake after another. They didn’t resemble the explosive team we’ve been seeing. Nor did they appear to have any particular game plan. All the Chiefs had to do was sit back and cruise to victory.

So now we will wait to see who they will face in Las Vegas. Will it be a rematch of the week one opener versus the Detroit Lions? Or will it be the dangerous San Francisco 49ers? At any rate, whichever team it is will have the arduous task of preventing the Chiefs from winning back-to-back Super Bowls. The last team to do it was the New England Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
