Chiefs Beat the 49ers in Overtime Winning Super Bowl Again

The 49ers jumped out to a 10-0 lead. However, the Chiefs eventually beat the 49ers in overtime winning the Super Bowl again. They won the big game last year making them back to back championship winners. Of course, the last team to do that was the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004.

The 49ers got the ball first to start the game. Their drive was going smoothly until disaster struck. McCaffrey fumbled the ball at the 25 yard line and Kansas City recovered it. The Chiefs couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and had to punt. But on the 49ers next possession a 5 yard false start and 10 yard holding penalty really set them back. They punted and then so did the Chiefs.

In the 2nd quarter the 49ers put the first points on the board with a 55 yard field goal. Following that the Chiefs put together a nice drive but Pacheco fumbled the ball on the 9 yard line. Although the 49ers recovered it they did nothing with the turnover. Two negligible runs and a sack had them punting the ball again.

On their next possession it was running back Christian McCaffrey who caught a pass from Jennings and then fought his way into the end zone. It was the only touchdown in the first half. But the Chiefs got on the board with a field goal ending the half trailing 10-3.

Mahomes opened the third quarter with a fumble that he recovered. And then he threw the rare interception. Again the 49ers failed to capitalize and in the third quarter they ended up being scoreless.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs hung around and managed to start moving the ball. They scored a field goal and later a touchdown in the third quarter. But the 49ers offense finally came alive in the fourth quarter scoring a touchdown and taking the lead back. But the extra point was missed. So instead of the score being 17-13 it was 16-13. That missed extra point definitely came back to haunt them. Because the Chiefs scored a field goal to tie it up. The 49ers then had to settle for a field goal and left too much time on the clock for the Chiefs. They (Kansas City) scored another field goal sending the game into overtime.

Chiefs Beat the 49ers in Overtime Winning Super Bowl Again

The 49ers got the ball first in OT. Again they couldn’t get into the end zone and had to kick a field goal. The 49ers defense kept allowing the Chiefs to convert on third and fourth downs. Consequently they were able to move the ball down field. On 1st & goal at the 3 yard line Mahomes found a wide open Hardman for the winning touchdown.

Overall it was an exciting, nail biting game. And for once it didn’t feel like the officiating had an impact on the outcome of the game. It also seemed like the 49ers put too much of the load on Brock Purdy. He didn’t need to play on the level of a veteran quarterback like a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. More of the running game might have been helpful. But I’m sure he will learn a lot from this game and the whole season.

I wonder if head coach Andy Reid will be considering retirement. What better way to go out on a high note than by winning back to back championships? At any rate football feens that’s it for the 2023 season. See you in about seven months. Stay strong!
