Chicago White Sox Will Have Number One Draft Pick in 2026 MLB Draft
Well they had the best odds to win (27.73 percent) and things did indeed go their way. On Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced that the Chicago White Sox will have the number one draft pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. The 2026 Draft will take place next July 11-12 in Philadelphia.
Nonetheless, this was a long time coming for the Sox. While they had found themselves drafting in the top ten countless times. For instance, in the past almost eight years Chicago has had an opportunity to draft a top ten pick or better.
2018: Selected the number four draft pick
2019: Had the number three pick
2024: Picked number five overall
2025: Began draft with the number 10 selection
But it was the number one overall pick that has alluded them season after season. However, that comes to end now. It only took about half a century to happen. Yes, it has been almost a staggering 50 years (1977) since the Chicago White Sox had the number one pick in the MLB Draft.
The last time they did have it though, it went well for them. They drafted a future Hall of Famer (Harold Baines). Baines played 22 seasons, accumulating 2,866 hits and playing in over 2,800 games, often as a DH. He led the White Sox to the 1983 American League West title – the Sox’s first postseason appearance since 1959. He was inducted in the Hall back in 2019.

White Sox general manager Chris Getz had an opportunity to chat with NFL Network about next year’s draft. He discussed why the White Sox are excited about having the number one pick; as well as possible top prospects. Getz mentions,
“It’s an opportunity to boost what we have going on right now,” White Sox general manager Chris Getz told MLB Network. “It’s an honor, it’s a huge responsibility. I’m just so happy for everyone. You prepare for all kinds of scenarios emotionally, but I can’t understate how big of a deal this is.
I’m still learning more and more about the Draft. I’m getting familiar with some of the top names. It looks like, at the top of the Draft, that it’s a really impressive one. On top of that, when you look at the pool space that you’re given and a chance to really walk away from a Draft class and do some damage, bring in some real talent. I look forward to diving in further.”
Well, next July we all get to kick back and see who goes number one overall. Who is going to be a Chicago White Sox? Currently, UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky seems to be leading the prospects pack. However, as we get closer we’ll be sure share other names to keep in mind.
