Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg Announces Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

He is a guy who made you want to root for him back in the day …. and now, we’re all rooting for him once again. Former Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg announces prostate cancer diagnosis; and has begun treatment. 

The sudden news ushers into the MLB community via social media. Ryne Sandberg announces on his Instagram about the battle he is now facing with metastatic prostate cancer. Sandberg says,

“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, extended Baseball Family; the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share some personal news. Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret; our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”

Ryne Sandberg is one of many kids’ favorite baseball players growing up in the 80s and 90s. Some may remember coming home from school and watching Ryan Sandberg hit homers for mostly lovable; but unfortunately competitively challenged Chicago Cubs teams. As well as hearing Harry Carey speak of him in a plethora of glowing ways on WGN.

Or, when hitting the baseball around with friends; Ryne Sandberg is one of the players that kids would imitate his batting stance when playing. He was a rare slugger hitting home runs as a second baseman; and so enjoyable to behold in action.

Ryne Sandberg Shares He’s Battling Cancer 

Evening anchor for 4 News Now, Derek Deis; additionally explains Sandberg’s impact on Major League Baseball and shares some very kind words for Ryne. Deis states,

Spokane native and Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg announced he’s been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. He graduated from N. Central HS in ‘78 and was named the ‘84 NL MVP for the Cubs. He was a 10-time all-star. Spokane is pulling for you.

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg also shares a few nice words about, and for Sandberg. Mike mentions,

“Sending all our love to Ryne Sandberg, Margaret, and their beautiful family. Ryno is the most humble superstar I ever covered, and getting to know him and Margaret over the years has been a joy for Stacy and me. You’ve got this, Ryno. We’re all with you.”

Yes, we all are with you Ryne. The 64 year old, played 16 MLB seasons before becoming a Cooperstown HOFer. An inductee of the 2005 class.

Over his playing career; with the Cubs and Phillies (13 games in 1981) . He hit .285 with 282 homers and 1,061 RBIs and posted a 67.9 WAR. What a guy.
