Chicago Cubs Finally Got Their Man Signed Alex Bregman To 5-Year Contract

On previous occasions they had been trying to pry him away during free agency without success. But it finally came to light that the dream had come true. On Saturday night the Chicago Cubs finally got their man and signed Alex Bregman to a 5-year contract worth $175 million. The deal includes no opt-outs and a full no-trade clause. When the contract is finalized, pending a physical, it will be the third largest in Cubs history in terms of total value.

Last season the Cubs won 92 games and a wild card spot in the playoffs. However, in five games they lost out to the division rival Milwaukee Brewers. So they saw the need to go get an impact starter and potentially a star-level bat. And Bregman would easily check both of those boxes. He is a three-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion and Gold Glove winner. The Cubs also added to the party, affordable right-handed pitcher, Edward Cabrera. That deal makes it simpler to pick up one of the top free-agent hitters still on the board.

While the Cubs organization is moving-and-shaking making good deals, the same hasn’t been said for Boston. Red Sox fans are not happy with how the management has been handling the players. In prior years they have lost players like Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. For the fans it feels as if the Red Sox are not maintaining some of their best players while continuing to add new players. Thereby continually making the team better.

Naturally chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was disappointed to see Bregman move on. However, he doesn’t see the point of dwelling on the loss. In an email to reporters, Breslow said, “We will continue to find the best ways to exhaust our resources… We have the flexibility to continue to push.” As a result, some fans feel exhausted trying to follow a team that may not appear to be competing at the highest level.

Therefore, Breslow now has the difficult task of replacing Bregman’s production. Signing Bo Bichette could be a solution, but there is certainly a market for securing his services. So Breslow will have to keep an open mind as to what countermove he should make.

Perhaps his best move would have been to listen when Bregman’s camp let him know that they had a better offer on the table. In the end, Bregman was fed up with the Red Sox. They were unwilling to meet his market after their initial offer. It should be interesting to see where Boston goes from here.

In the meantime, congratulations to Alex Bregman on his big, new deal!
