Chicago Bears Revamping Offensive Line With Two New Additions
Caleb Williams was drafted with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Bears. He was projected to be their franchise quarterback bringing hope back to the city. However, the 2024 season did not turn out the way the Bears had hoped it would. Part of the reason for the lack of success was that Williams was often running for his life. He was in desperate need of protection. So the Chicago Bears are in the process of revamping their offensive line with two new additions.
Yesterday they traded for Los Angeles Rams guard Jonah Jackson. In exchange for a sixth-round pick, as first reported by ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “Bears are in the process of trading for Jonah Jackson and sending a 2025 6th to the Los Angeles Rams. One major need on the OL is addressed before free agency begins. Jackson played center, left guard and right guard last year and was limited to 4 games due to a shoulder injury.” Jackson was a Pro Bowler in 2021 when Ben Johnson was the Lions passing game coordinator.
But the Chicago Bears weren’t done yet with the offensive line. Today it was announced that they are trading a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney. Thuney was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round (78th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. His durability, rarely missing games, and his ability to play center (e.g., filling in for David Andrews in 2020) underscored his versatility.
Thuney joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 on a five-year, $80 million deal. He has continued to excel, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023. And contributing to four Super Bowl titles (three with the Patriots, one with the Chiefs by 2023).
Chicago Bears Revamping Offensive Line With Two New Additions
With the addition of two accomplished offensive linemen, the Bears are determined to protect their quarterback. Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times in his rookie season. New head coach Ben Johnson clearly wants to rectify that problem by bringing in veteran guys who can look after Williams. “I think offensive line is certainly an area that we need to get better play from going forward, something that [general manager] Ryan [Poles] and I have already talked about,” Johnson said on Jan. 20.
Williams has to be ecstatic about seeing these trades acquiring such versatile players. Knowing he may not have to run for his life during the 2025 season. However, both trades cannot be processed until the start of the NFL’s new league year on March 12.
