Chicago Bears Have Hired Their New Head Coach

Chicago Bears Have Hired Their New Head Coach

After interviewing a number of candidates the windy city team has finally concluded their search. No doubt they thought they would have to wait a few more weeks to get the guy they wanted. However, the Washington Commanders put an end to their wait. And now the Chicago Bears have hired their new head coach, Ben Johnson. He is the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator. A team that many thought would be competing in the Super Bowl this year. But their 45-31 loss to the Commanders in the divisional playoff round put an end to that dream.

However, it did free up Ben Johnson sooner than expected and the Bears wasted no time in making their move. It makes sense that they would want him because of the success he’s had with Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff. Goff is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL so naturally the Bears will want him to work with their quarterback Caleb Williams. Under Johnson, Goff has thrown for more than 4,400 yards each of the past three seasons. He made two of his four career Pro Bowls in that stretch.

Chicago is sorely in need of Johnson’s offensive talents. As Adam Schefter pointed out, the Lions have done great things with Johnson:

“In three seasons with Ben Johnson as the Lions OC, Detroit ranked top-5 in scoring all three years, finishing 5th in 2022 and 2023 and 1st in 2024 at 33.2 PPG. The Lions led the NFL in scoring this season for the first time since 1954. Only the 49ers had more 20-yd plays (240) over the last three seasons than the Lions’ 230 with Johnson running the offense. The Lions’ 28.2 offensive PPG from 2022-24 were the most in the NFL.”

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Johnson is already working on assembling his staff, with former New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen the leading candidate to be hired as Chicago’s defensive coordinator. The Bears are also heavily pursuing Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi to be their special teams coordinator, sources told Schefter. No doubt Caleb Williams will be happy with the hire. He had made some positive comments regarding Johnson earlier this month:

“I think during our game, I would sit back and watch and try and learn something while I watch,” Williams said. “It was fascinating to watch because he always had wrinkles for counters and things like that throughout the game. I think he’s obviously done really well, so it’d be cool to see how that all goes down.”

We’ll see if Johnson can work miracles in Chicago as he did in Detroit.
