Chicago Bears Grant Training Camp Exception For Jonathan Owens
He’s married to the most decorated gymnast in the world. And as her husband he wants to support his wife to the fullest. To make that happen the Chicago Bears will grant a training camp exception for Jonathan Owens. Biles just qualified to compete in her third Olympics and Owens wants to be there to cheer her on. However, the scheduling of the Olympic games presents a scheduling conflict with the upcoming Chicago Bears training camp.
Owens signed a two-year, $4.75 million deal with the Chicago Bears this offseason. Therefore, he is contractually obligated to attend training camp which starts July 19 and runs through the end of August. The Paris Olympics run from July 26 to August 11. However, he won’t need to be in Paris for the duration of the Olympic games. The women’s gymnastics events will begin on July 28 and the Team Final will be held on July 30. And the Women’s All-Around Final will be on August 01.
It was Biles, who revealed to USA Today that the Bears were going to make the exception for Owens. “The Bears are actually granting him a couple days off from training camp, so he’ll be there, yes,” she said, grinning. “For just a short little time.” Although the couple have been together since 2020 and married in April 2023 this will be the first of her major international competitions he’s been able to attend. And since training camp absences are rarely excused this exception is a big deal.

Biles took a break from her sport after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health. After a two-year hiatus she returned to gymnastics in August 2023 and is back to her superior form. It’s almost like she never left. And although she has been winning she wants her support system to stay in place. Thus, having her husband at the Olympics rooting for her is critical. So the Bears recognizing this need, approved of the training camp absence. Now that’s how to show that the NFL really is family like they say in their commercials.
Biles also remarked about her appreciation for the Bears gesture. “Anytime we can show up for one another in support, we just get super excited because our schedules don’t align that much,” Biles said. “So whenever it does, it’s really important for the both of us to show up in support.” Now that Owens and Biles have received such good news no doubt this will make the Olympics even more special for the couple.
