Chicago Bears Fired Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron

Chicago Bears Fired Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron

We’re past the halfway mark of the 2024 season and there have already been coaching changes. Joining in the fray, are the Chicago Bears who fired their offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. They officially announced that he was relieved of his duties this morning. Although the firing had been reported yesterday by multiple outlets. Offensive passing game coordinator Thomas Brown has been promoted to offensive coordinator. It would seem that losing to the struggling New England Patriots was the final nail in the coffin. Something had to be done about the team’s steadily declining offensive performance. Head coach Matt Eberflus made a statement regarding the change:

“After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully,” said head coach Matt Eberflus. “I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.

“Thomas is a bright offensive mind who has experience calling plays with a collaborative mindset. I look forward to his leadership over our offensive coaching staff and his plan for our players.”

Waldron had previously worked as an assistant coach for multiple NFL teams. He worked as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks prior to being hired by the Bears in January 2024. Waldron was apparently tapped for the OC position to help develop rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. As for Brown he has worked at the collegiate and professional levels. He spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Miami (Fla.), leading the Hurricanes’ offense from 2016-18. Brown joined the Bears in 2024 as the offensive passing game coordinator.

There is always two sides to every story but current ESPN analysts and former NFL players weighed in on the matter. Jeff Saturday and Dominique Foxworth agreed that Caleb Williams holds the ball too long. Saturday said that even when the line is protecting him, Williams is not getting rid of the ball quick enough. Foxworth agreed that Williams is holding onto the ball too long but that his receivers aren’t getting open quick enough either.

The Bears are on a three-game losing streak and have only scored 27 points during that time period. And they have not scored a touchdown in 23 consecutive possessions. That is demoralizing to say the least and doesn’t bode well for the quarterback’s future development. Brown will have his work cut out for him trying to get Williams and the offense back on a positive track.
