Charlie Woods Set To Follow In Famous Father’s Footsteps

They say that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. There have been many children who follow in the footsteps of their parents. And Charlie Woods appears to be set to follow in his famous father’s footsteps. None other than 15-time major champion golfing great Tiger Woods. Charlie Woods qualified yesterday for the U.S. Junior Amateur championship one of four golfers to secure a spot in the U.S. Junior Amateur. Posting a 1-under 71, he finished first at a qualifying event at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, FL.

Could history repeat itself? Tiger Woods won the U.S. Junior Amateur for the first time at the age of 15. He first won in 1991 and won it again in 1992 and 1993. He is the only one to win the event three times. Other notable winners are former three-time golf champion Jordan Spieth and the current No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler. Charlie is currently 15 so he’s off to a good start. Previously participants were required to be under the age of 18. However, in 2016 the age limit was changed to allow anyone under the age of 19 to compete starting with the 2017 championship.

Charlie has spent some time working alongside his father. They have participated in the parent/child PNC Championship event for the past four years. Their best result came in 2021 when they finished second to John Daly and his son, John Daly II. However, he was able to hold his own in the junior event. His first round got off to a rough start with a bogey followed by a double bogey. But he rallied with three birdies in four holes ending his front nine at an even-par 36. Eventually he ended the day as the only player at 1-under-par which was good enough for first place.

His high school golf team won a state championship in Florida. Now he is on his way to his next biggest event and couldn’t be happier. “It feels amazing to qualify for my first USGA championship,” Charlie said after his round. “I’m excited to compete in the U.S. Junior Amateur next month, especially somewhere as historic as Oakland Hills.”

According to a USGA official his father, Tiger Woods, was in attendance at the junior competition. He is no doubt proud of his son, but is it nerve-wracking having Tiger Woods watching your every stroke, or is he just dad to Charlie? Either way, he’s off to an auspicious start to what could be another great Woods career.
