Chargers Lost Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter Who Became Baltimore Ravens Head Coach
Ten head coaching jobs were up for grabs after the 2025 season ended. And another one of those jobs has been filled. After having a second in-person interview the decision was made. The Los Angeles Chargers have lost their defensive coordinator Jesse Minter who became the Baltimore Ravens head coach. He interviewed for several head coaching positions and was supposed to interview with the Cleveland Browns. But he canceled that interview so he could return to Baltimore. The decision paid off because now Minter has a five-year contract as the Ravens head coach.
In their 31-year history the Baltimore Ravens have only had three head coaches and Minter will be their fourth. Preceding him were Ted Marchibroda (1996–1998) Brian Billick (1999–2007) and John Harbaugh (2008–2025). Minter had previously worked under the recently fired Harbaugh. He spent four seasons on Harbaugh’s staff, working his way up from a defensive assistant in 2017 to defensive backs coach in 2020.
Minter also spent time in the college ranks working as Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator in 2021. Then joining Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2022, winning a national championship as Michigan’s defensive coordinator a year later. After Jim was hired as the Los Angeles Chargers head coach he brought Minter on to head up their defense. So he has had the opportunity to work with the Harbaugh family for multiple years and that was part of the reason why he was brought onto the Ravens.
He also has a connection and similar pathway to Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald. Not only did Minter replace MacDonald in roles he vacated, but the two also worked together for four years on Baltimore’s staff (2017-2020) and helped craft the Ravens’ innovative defensive scheme.

So the hope is that Minter can replicate the success MacDonald has had in becoming Seattle’s head coach two years ago. MacDonald is set to play in the NFC Championship game this weekend. Therefore general manager Eric DeCosta was inspired to say:
“Jesse is a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike,” General Manager Eric DeCosta stated. “Jesse comes from a football family, with success at every level of the sport, and we are confident that he is the right coach to lead the Ravens forward.”
Adding to the praise for Minter Ravens Owner Steve Bisciotti said:
“Jesse was impressive throughout our incredibly thorough interview process,” Ravens Owner Steve Bisciotti stated. “He clearly understands the values, high expectations and history of the Ravens, and he has a great vision for the future. Jesse’s football acumen is outstanding, and that’s been proven by the impact he’s made throughout his entire coaching career.”
Congratulations to Jesse Minter on getting his first head coaching position with a prestigious organization!
