Chargers Beat Down Patriots And Clinched Playoff Spot
A lot of teams were hoping that the Patriots would win on Saturday against the Chargers. Their playoff hopes and seeding depended on a Patriots win. But alas, they were all sorely disappointed on Saturday with the result of the first tripleheader game. Yes, the NFL scheduled three games on Saturday, Dec. 28, I don’t know why. However, the Chargers were okay with it as they beat down the Patriots and clinched a playoff spot.
The Patriots couldn’t get any offensive rhythm going and the defense couldn’t get any stops. Early in the first quarter QB Drake Maye took a hit to the head and had to leave the field. Jacoby Brissett came in on the next drive and went three and out. However, after being evaluated he returned to the game. However, Christian Gonzalez was ruled out with a concussion. Meanwhile the Chargers were able to do whatever they wanted as they ran and passed the ball at will. There was no pressure at all on QB Justin Herbert who had time all day long to throw the ball.
Maye fumbled the ball in the second quarter and the Chargers turned it into their second touchdown of the half. On the next possession the Patriots put together a drive with Maye running for 30 yards and then finding Douglas for the 36-yard touchdown. Maye threw for his 8th straight game with a TD pass, a new franchise rookie record. Previously set by Jim Plunkett with seven in 1971. The Chargers went on a ten play drive but the Patriots held them to a 38-yard field goal. The score at halftime was 20-7.

The misery for the Patriots continued into the third quarter. They punted on their opening possession while the Chargers scored a touchdown. They turned the ball over on downs after Maye was sacked for a 15-yard loss and the Chargers scored a 41-yard field goal. The Patriots were able to move the ball but there were too many incomplete passes and Maye was sacked for a seven yard loss. After a run and two incomplete passes they went for it on 4th & 7 at LAC 31. But Maye was sacked again and they turned the ball over on downs. And of course the Chargers scored another touchdown.
The Patriots punted and their defense caused the Chargers to punt for the second time. Head coach Jim Harbaugh took his starters out of the game in the fourth quarter. Which made sense because they were up 37-7. And then they tacked on another three points, final score 40-7. The Patriots will have a lot of work to do in the offseason.
